Business Email Practice Prompt #3

Example from the 2014 PAT

Success Criteria

● I can communicate accurately and effectively

● I can select words and phrases appropriate to their purpose
● I can demonstrate control of sentence structure, usage, and mechanics
● I can develop, organize, and evaluate ideas for a specified purpose and audience

Directions:
Use the sender information and prompt to write a formal business email. Use the
powerpoint in Google Classroom titled Formatting PAT Business Letters to help guide your
letter. When writing, be sure to identify the purpose of the letter, explain the details of the
situation and request, organize your thoughts appropriately in sentences and paragraphs,
and use vocabulary that is appropriate and effective.

Prompt:
Write a business letter to Mr. Frank McKenzie, principal of Glenway School, to present your
ideas regarding features of a Student Rewards Program that could benefit your school.
Provide enough information to convince Mr. McKenzie of the advantages of establishing
such a program.

Address Information:
To: Mr. Frank McKenzie. Glenway School is located in the city of Allster, Alberta. The school’s
post office box number is 5133 and the postal code is T3W 6R5. Frank McKenzie is the
principal.

From: Taylor Smith. Taylor Smith lives on 111 Street at house number 12398. The postal code
is T7V 4Y9. Taylor resides in the town of Dallard, Alberta.

Please Note:
When writing this business letter, try to really put yourself into the shoes of a student who
wants the reward program. You can make up scenarios and examples that are functional,
but relate to the point. You are pretending to be someone who is passionate enough about
this topic to reach out to try and make a change. Think to yourself - Why might they be
passionate? What experiences would they have that would make them passionate about
this? Including these details and personal experience (even if it is fake) will help you
further your argument - and in turn get you a better grade.
