APPLICATION LETTERS

• Definition
They are used for introducing yourself to your potential employers, thus the
letters should be brief, clear, correct and polite. Avoid to make many mistakes on
your application letters by using the correct punctuation and coherent paragraphs
that will give them good impressions.

• Purposes
 It allows you to sell yourself by pointing out key features of your CV.
 It gives you the opportunity to include material that is not in the CV,
especially personal qualities that you listed when making your
preparations.
 It shows a prospective employer that you know how to write a letter.
While this may be of decreasing importance in an electronic age, many
employers still value it highly, both as a skill in its own right and as a test
of your ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

• What should go in it?

 The introduction: In the introduction you should detail the job you are
applying for, and, if relevant, the circumstances that have led to this (for
example an advertisement, or the recommendation of an agency).

 The body: The body of the letter provides you with an opportunity to
present yourself to the employer:
 Tell the reader about your present job and why you are looking to
move on.
 Explain why you are suitable for this job
 Emphasize the skills you have which make you particularly
suitable for the job.
 List briefly the personal qualities you would bring to it
 Answer any specific questions posed by the advert or job details
 It is important not to write too much, however. Two, or at most
three, short punchy paragraphs are much more effective than two
sides of rambling prose.

 The conclusion: The conclusion should round the letter off, leaving the
reader with a positive image. It should sum up briefly the selling points
made in the body of the letter, mention any items (including the CV, your
academic certificates, reference letters) you are enclosing, and express
willingness to provide any further information that the reader may want.

• Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)?

The primary differences are the length, the content and the purpose. A resume is a one
or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. A goal of resume writing
is to be brief and concise since, at best, the resume reader will spend a minute or so
reviewing your qualifications.

A Curriculum Vitae, commonly referred to as CV, is a longer (two or more pages), more
detailed synopsis. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds
as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors,
affiliations and other details.

When to Use a CV

In the United States a Curriculum Vitae is used primarily when applying for international,
academic, education, scientific or research positions or when applying for fellowships or
grants. As with a resume, you may need different versions of a CV for different type of
positions.

What to Include in Your CV

Like a resume, your CV should include your name, contact information, education, skills
and experience. In addition to the basics, a CV includes research and teaching
experience, publications, grants and fellowships, professional associations and licenses,
awards and other information relevant to the position you are applying for. Start by
making a list of all your background information, then organize it into categories. Make
sure you include dates on all the publications you include.

can include the appropriate information in your curriculum vitae (CV) and format your
curriculum vitae correctly. Remember, the first impression is the one that matters, so,
your CV needs to be perfect!
