Quick definitions

What is stress?

Stress is the mental strain resulting from a

high-pressure situation. Stress can be good
in moderation (i.e. eustress), but too much is
detrimental to your performance. This
extreme stress is called distress or
overstress. Our focus in this guide will be the
elimination of overstress.

The impactof stress
In general, anything like stress that negatively
impacts your performance can be considered
an “interference,” according to acclaimed
sports psychologist Tim Gallwey. The effect
of interferences can be seen in Gallwey’s
performance equation:

Performance = Potential - Interference

Interferences fall into two categories: mental and physical. Stress, of course,
belongs to the former. Check out the categorization of other interferences below.

Mental = stress, self-doubt, fear, lack of confidence, indecision, poor self-image

Physical = distractions, negative associations, media you consume, temptations

Exercise 2
THE COMPOUND EFFECTS OF STRESS

Stress compounds over time. This is because when the responsibilities or challenges of
life are not handled, the consequences increase and the harder the situation becomes
to fix.

The longer we wait to pay a debt, the more interest accrues. The longer we wait to
stop eating junk food, the more we pack on pounds. The longer we wait to ask out the
attractive girl or guy, the more anxiety we feel and the more negative self-talk creeps
into our heads.

Go back to the three stressors you listed in Exercise 1. What would your life or business
look like a year from now if you didn’t get those stressors handled?

THE POSER OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Now, while it is true that there are many ways to deal with stress, it is important to note
that they are not all created equal. It is considerably harder to combat stress without
accountability. In fact, accountability is a critical part of meeting any goal.
In school, we have teachers and professors who penalize us for not answering
questions correctly. At home growing up, we had our parents who punished us for
misbehaving or not doing our chores.
At a 9-to-5 job, we have bosses who report us to management or fire us for breaking
company rules or not meeting company standards.
Most people have ZERO accountability for their goals. This of course also applies to
mental health goals, which is why we would advise you to take a look at the diagram
below.

The mental health accountability spectrum

1 (Least accountability) <------------------------------------------------------> 10 (Most

accountability)

1 = Journaling (J), meditation (M), and exercise (E)

3 = J/M/E with an accountability partner
5 = J/M/E with an accountability app
8 = Support group
10 = Therapist
Exercise 3
ACCOUNTABILITY VS. NO ACCOUNTABILITY

Recall a time when you worked toward a goal with accountability and a time when you
did so with no accountability. What were the results in each scenario?
CONSEQUENCES OF LACKING ACCOUNTABILITY

Studies show that when compared to peer coaching and self-coaching, having a
professional coach is more effective from a results standpoint.

If you would like a support group or therapist, we would strongly recommend that
you see a health insurance specialist due to the various pitfalls and knowledge
gaps you may face as a layperson that can enable insurance companies to take
advantage of you.
