Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge


• Students should know how to read basic musical notation including notes, rhythms, and
symbols such as clefs, time signatures, and dynamics.
• Students should have a basic understanding of how to assemble, hold, and care for their
brass instrument. They should also be familiar with the names and functions of the
different parts of their instrument.
• Students should have some understanding of how to form a proper embouchure (mouth
position) to produce a sound on their brass instrument. This may include concepts such as
proper lip placement, firmness, and airflow. Basic music theory concepts:
• Students should have a basic understanding of concepts such as pitch, scales, intervals,
and simple musical terms.
• Have not mastered tone quality, they should have some ability to produce a sound on
their instrument, even if it is not yet consistent or strong.
• Depending on the specific brass instrument, students should have a basic understanding
of the fingerings or slide positions necessary to produce different pitches.

Objectives
Students will be able to
• Play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on their brass instrument in the key of F.
• Demonstrate understanding of note reading and rhythm in the context of the song.

Procedures

Introduction (2 minutes):
