Once upon a time, a certain foreigner came to our district to visit, and he had seen a
tree that had fruit. The foreigner asked our ancestors for the fruit’s name and, since our
ancestors didn’t understand the foreigners language, they spoke in our language
(Pangasinan) and said “bonga to” which means “fruit of that tree”, and that was when
our district was named after it (Bongato).
