COLLEGE STUDENTS' VOCABULARY ACQUISITION TECHNIQUES:

A SYSTEMATIC INQUIRY ON STUDENTS' PERCEPTION

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Vocabulary acquisition is the process of learning new words in a language. It is essential for
learning the first language, even though it is often linked to learning a second language.
Vocabulary is not an end in itself, but helps to develop the four skills of speaking, listening,
reading, and writing. The methods used to increase vocabulary vary from person to person,
with native speakers and non-native speakers going through different learning processes.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to identify the techniques college students employ to
improve their vocabulary. It tends to answer the following questions:

1. What are the students' techniques for acquiring vocabulary?

2. How did students retain the new words they encountered?

Significance of the Study

This study will help students acquire new vocabulary and language learners retain new
words.

Students: This study will help students in learning new techniques on how to acquire new
vocabulary. It will also show them on how to retain new words they may encounter.

Language learners: This study will help them in learning

Data Gathering Procedure

Researchers will observe confidentiality and use ethics in research to gather data for this
study.

Ethic Consideration

As researchers gather data for their study, they must adhere to ethical principles.
This begins with seeking explicit permission from respondents before conducting any
research activities, ensuring they fully understand the purpose and scope of the
study. Transparency is key, as participants should be informed about how their data
will be used and the potential impacts of their participation. Additionally, researchers
must uphold confidentiality by safeguarding the personal information shared by
respondents. This entails implementing measures to protect sensitive data from
unauthorized access or disclosure, thereby fostering trust and respect within the
research community. By prioritizing ethics in research, scholars uphold the dignity
and autonomy of participants, ultimately advancing knowledge in an ethical and
responsible manner (Bhandari, 2023).
