1. Introduction

PopUp dictionary POLYGLOSSUM II was made for working together with

other programs working in the text mode, under MS-DOS 3.3 or higher,
or a compatible OS (DR-DOS, PTS-DOS etc.)

In terms of lexical data bases, POLYGLOSSUM II for DOS is compatible

with POLYGLOSSUM II for Windows (see also the POLYGLOSSUM II for
Windows User's Guide).

Data bases similar to polygraphical dictionaries are used in the

program.

The alphabetical indices are compiled in both languages of the

dictionary. With a word (or phrase) from the alphabetical index, the
program finds all lines of the dictionary, containing this word (or
phrase).

In addition, it is possible to view in full the entry of the

dictionary, containing any of the found lines of the dictionary.

Copying text from the dictionary to other applications through the

text buffer of the dictionary is also provided for. Transfer of the
text from the buffer of the dictionary to other programs is made via
emulation of keyboard input (INT 16).

Initial word or phrase for searching in the lexical data base could
be typed by the user manually (after invocation of the program) or
copied from the screen. In calling (invoking) the dictionary, the
word pointed by the cursor is automatically transfered to the
dictionary for the searching.

If you have several lexical data bases for PG2, you can dynamically
switch between them.

Program POLYGLOSSUM-II has no internal character code, and was made

for working with Russian texts in the alternative code (Russia's
standard), so it could be used with the following code pages:

CODEPAGE 866 - ALTERNATIVE CODE (Russia's standard)

- for working with the

English-Russian-English dictionary,
Russian-English and alphabet compatible texts

CODEPAGE 900 (standard in Finland, compatible with the

codepage 866, letters of Scandinavian alphabets are added)

- for working
with texts and lexical data bases including
Russian, English, Finnish, and Scandinavian
languages.

CODEPAGE 920 (compatible with CODEPAGE 900, letters of the German

alphabet are added)

- for working
with texts and lexical data bases including
English, German, Scandinavian languages, and
also others compatible in terms of
the alphabet.

To install the code pages mentioned and correspondingly customize

the keyboard, you can use screen fonts (files ***.CPI) and
customized keyboard driver TopKey included in the
POLYGLOSSUM package.

2. Installation of the dictionary on the hard disk.

To install the dictionary on the hard disk insert distribution

CD-ROM into drive, make this drive current and
start program SETUP.EXE in the DOS session.

For example:
if you use CD drive D, type commands

>D:

>SETUP
(if you run this program under Windows environtment it will install
Windows-version of POLYGLOSSUM)

Installation programm ask you about directory to put the dictionary in,
about language of help, and about your monitor
(color or black ans white).

Choose options and press F2 to continue.

Then installaion programm copy all files needed, make some

customization and make the batch file (PG2.BAT) to load resident part of
the dictionary into memory.

After that installation program starts utility SET_DIC.EXE which

help you customize the list of dictionaries in use.

There are two text files which described dictionary files available
for POLYGLOSSUM: CD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries on CD-ROM) and
HD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries which had been installed on hard disk)

If CD-ROM is in drive, both CD-resident dictionaried and installed on HD

will available, otherwise you will see only HD-located dictionaries.
POLYGLOSSUM in start time checks HD_DICTS.PG2 and add all available
dictionaries into the menu, then it checks CD_DICTS.PG2 and add
into the menu dictionaries available on CD which are absent on hard disk.

Using dictionaries from HD is faster, but more disk space is needed.

Setup will copy SET_DIC.EXE into POLYGLOSSUM's directory, so you can also
use SET_DIC.EXE late to copy dictionaries onto hard disk (or remove from
hard disk).

Program FLOPPY.EXE can be used to install aditional (new) lexical

databases which are distributed on floppy disks.

You can also manually edit files CD_DICTS.PG2 and HD_DICTS.PG2.

There may be two reasons for that:
- you can edit dictionaries names wich form POLYGLOSSUM's menu
- if you have another CD-ROM disk with POLYGLOSSUM's dictionaries
add descriptions of these dictionaries to CD_DICTS.PG2
(using existing lines as example). So POLYGLOSSUM (and SET_DIC.EXE)
will "see" different set of dictionaries depending on
which CD-ROM disk is in the drive.

3. Calling the dictionary to search for a given word.

To make calling POLYGLOSSUM-II from another DOS program possible,

residential part of the dictionary must be loaded in the memory.

Some DOS customizing must be made beforehand.

In order to work with Germany-Russian texts you must
install appropriate screen fonts and keyboard driver.

!!! IMPORTANT for Germany-Russian dictionaries users !!!

POLYGLOSSUM for DOS is designed for "codepage 920"
which allow to work with standard Russian, standard English
and extended to work with the alphbets of Germany, Finland, ...

We recommend use TopKey package supplied with POLYGLOSSUM.

The TopKey has its own installation program and user's guide.

If you have already used the POLYGLOSSUM-II installation program,

it has already created a batch file PG2.BAT for loading the resident
part of the dictionary.

Run it and POLYGLOSSUM will ready to be used.

To call the dictionary from another program

and to transfer a word for searching to it, the following
operations should be done:

�) move the cursor to the word which you want to find in the dictionary
b) press the keys for calling the dictionary ( <Alt 1>, if not redefined,
see also Appendix 1.)

While the dictionary is invoked, help is always available by

pressing <F1>.

In order to unload POLYGLOSSUM (and free memory) run PG2.BAT with the
parameter "U":
>PG2 U

4. Searching for information in the dictionary.

Searching for words is being made in the alphabetical index lists

of the dictionary.

To switch between the alphabetical lists,

press the <F3> key.

Scrolling of the alphabetical list is being made using keys

<Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>.

Selected element of the alphabetical list is automatically

displayed is the upper edit window. Revision of the
content of this window results in the corresponding
scrolling of the alphabetical list.

With a selected word from the alphabetical list, all lines of

the dictionary containing this word could be found.

Exit from the dictionary (returning back to the program which it

was called from) - keys <Esc> or <F10>.

If you have several lexical data bases for PG2,

you can dinamically switch between them (key <F6>)

With a selected word from the alphabetical list, the PG2 program
finds all lines of the dictionary, containing this word. To do that,
press <Enter>. After that, the lines found are displayed in the
window.

Scrolling may be made using keys

<Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>.

In addition to displaying lines of the dictionary, names of the

entries containing these lines are also being displayed. On
selecting a line, it is possible to turn to viewing the corresponding
entry of the dictionary. For that, press <Enter>. The position in
which the line selected is located will be automatically found in the
window for viewing the entriy of the dictionary.

If the entry of the dictionary is long, scrolling may be made using

keys <Up>, <Down>, <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <Home>, <End>. Exit from the mode
of viewing the entry of the dictionary - <Esc>.

5. Copying text of the dictionary

Transfer of text from the dictionary to other applications
is made through the text buffer of the dictionary.

Fragments of text of the found lines of the dictionary or

entries of the dictionary could be copied to the buffer.

To switch to the mode of copying text from the mode of

viewing the lines of the dictionary found or the mode of
viewing an entry of the dictionary, press the <F5> key.

Marking text - <Shift + cursor control keys>,

memorizing the text marked - <Enter>.
Exit from the copying mode - <Esc>.

Appendix 1.

Cusomizing program.

1) Customizing dictionaties in use.

There are two text files which described dictionary files available
for POLYGLOSSUM: CD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries on CD-ROM) and
HD_DICTS.PG2 (dictionaries which had been installed on hard disk)

CD_DICTS.PG2 - dictionaries on CD-ROM

contains 2 lines for each dictionary
1st line - pathname of dictionary file
2nd line - name of the dictionary (as it appears in the menu)
1st symbol must be semicolon

example:

F:\PG_II\math.pgb
:Mathematical dictionary
F:\PG_II\busin.pgb
:Business dictionary

HD_DICTS.PG2 - dictionaries on hard disk

it has the same structure as CD_DICTS.PG2

If CD-ROM is in drive, both CD-resident dictionaried and installed on HD

will available, otherwise you will see only HD-located dictionaries.
POLYGLOSSUM in start time checks HD_DICTS.PG2 and add all available
dictionaries into the menu, then it checks CD_DICTS.PG2 and add
into the menu dictionaries available on CD which are absent on hard disk.

2) Loading into memory and unloading POLYGLOSSUM

a) Make the additional RC.COM program (interface of the lexical
program with DOS) residential. To do it, just start it. On the
repeated run of the RC.COM, it is unloaded from the memory, and it
unloads also the residential part of the dictionary from the memory.

b) Start the PGD.EXE program:

>PGD

In order to start POLYGLOSSUM in black and white mode add in the command
line parameter /BW

>PGD /BW

By default, POLYGLOSSUM-II sets hot keys <Alt 1> for calling

the dictionary, and <Alt 2> for inserting the text memorized in
the dictionary buffer to another program.

You can redefine the hot keys for calling

Polyglossum and insertion the text memorized
to that being revised.

In order to redefime "call key" add in the command line

parameter /Cnn:mm where nn is scan code of the key and mm is
Shift status (!! both nn and mm must be DECIMAL !!)

In order to redefime "paste key" add in the command line

parameter /Pnn:mm where nn is scan code of the key and mm is
Shift status (!! both nn and mm must be DECIMAL !!)

example: starting POLYGLOSSUM with "call key" = <Ctrl Alt F1>

and "paste key" = <F12>, color mode

Revise correspondingly the batch file using which you will

load the residential part of POLYGLOSSUM-II in the memory.

Appendix 2.

For Word Perfect users.

The dictionary could be called from any program working in the

text mode and using the screen fonts and keyboard driver
given by the DOS environment.

Some programs, however, may use their own screen fonts and
interpret key strokes in a non-standard way during typing text.
In working with such programs, the POLYGLOSSUM program may not
work correctly.

In particular, for correct working of POLYGLOSSUM together with

the Word Perfect word processor, in addition to the above said,
the following customizing must be made:

1) Copy files WPxxxx.WCP supplied with POLYGLOSSUM-II to the

Word Perfect directory (you will find them on the distribution
disk in the directory "\FOR_WP")
2) Run Word Perfect with a parameter /CP=866 or /CP=900 or /CP=920,
depending on the code page used by you.
3) Customize Word Perfect for the DOS font (256 characters).
(keys Shift F1, 2, 1, 6)
4) Switch off internal Word Perfect keyboard driver
(keys Shift F1, 5, choose enhanced keyboard or any other
given by DOS).
5) Load the file which is being revised to Word Perfect. It could be
either Word Perfect, or ASCII file corresponding to the code page
(866, 900 or 920) chosen, in particular, it could be any text
file received from Russia.

On revising a file in Word Perfect using Polyglossum, the file

could be processed in Word Perfect customized to another mode
(also on another computer), the file would be correct.
If this file is exported to DOS from Word Perfect, with the
customizing mentioned above it will be compatible with any
program using the code page which you were working in. Russian
text would be processed correctly on any computer in Russia.
