Reading Response #2

I attended the Global Black Rhetoric’s Unleased Panel Presentation on February 8, 2024.

I will be doing Option #2. The first of four pillars presented was “Assessing out past and present

methods for educating Black people about Black people.” This was automatically interesting to

me as an African American woman. The next was “Studying and teaching Black language

diversity in the United States and in transnational contexts.” Third, “Utilizing both historical and

modern texts and rhetors from various African and African Diasporic rhetorical traditions. The

last pillar is “Prioritizing healing as a communal goal of GBR.” These pillars were the

background ideas surrounding each of the six presentations.

Each presentation used similar but different methods of research and writing. The first

presentation used sources that included first-hand information of the people that she was

researching. This was helpful to her as she was not able to personally interact with this

community of people and there was not much data on them. The second presentation used

research from her own personal experiences and family as well as articles and songs available

online. These were good research methods for this presenter as it was all extremely relevant to

her and easy to evaluate and present with. The other presenters used sources like this, more

specifically the media including shows and songs. These methods seemed to be good for each of

them with their own individual research and gave me some inspiration.
Much of what was presented was about racism in society in many different ways. The

ideas presented were extremely interesting and I agree with many of their points. They point out

the racism and oppression in many different areas about life. They evaluate different areas that

many people overlook. I learned about many different artists and shows including Spice the artist

and her struggles regarding her skin color as well as the show Boondocks and racism within that

show. I saw the way they presented their research questions, and their key points were very

similar to the way we have been taught to format our research. I do want to look more into some

of these pop culture sources that they are using as I find it extremely interesting. For my own

composition process, I found the different research questions they used as very interesting and

inspirational. I have ideas for better questions that I can investigate.

I think the benefits for presenting at an event like this are extensive. Not only does your

work get out, but you can get many different opinions from peers. This can be extremely helpful

to further and better your own research. So professionally, this helps to spread your work, and

academically, this can help to better your work.
