SCI 9 ACT 401: READ AND LEARN PROJECTILE MOTION

1. Define projectile motion. A projectile is any object that once projected or dropped continues in motion by its
own inertia and is influenced only by the downward force of gravity

2. Place a check mark on items that are classified as projectile motion.

✓ basketball at free throw
✓ fired arrow
✓ tossed coin
✓ playing darts
✓ dropping a ball
✓ serving volleyball

3. What are the two components of a projectile motion and which type of motion is each of them?
Velocity component: horizontal motion
Direction component: vertical motion

4. What is a trajectory? It is the path that an object with mass in motion follows through space as a function of
time.
5. Analyze Figure 16-3 on page 370.
a. What can you say about the arrows that represent the horizontal velocity? A projectile moves along its path
with a constant horizontal velocity.
b. What can you say about the arrows that represent the vertical velocity? Its vertical velocity changes by -9.8
m/s each second of motion.

6. Give two (2) examples of each that were not mentioned in the book.

Projectile launched HORIZONTALLY

Cannon Ball
Rock fall on a cliff

…at an ANGLE WITH HORIZONTAL

Basket Ball thrown on the net
Socks thrown on the basket
