REFLECTION

Growing up surrounded by people who excel in the amazing world of business

fueled my intrigue for the intricacies of corporate endeavors. Witnessing my relatives

create business empires from scratch to grandeur sparked a desire within me to

uncover their success strategies. As a student who is passionate about managing

businesses and other areas, the subject of Operations Management became a

necessity for me as the lessons I garnered became my guide on how to become the

successful entrepreneur I want to be. Instead of feeling as sleepy as I usually am, the

prospect of learning this subject from our remarkable teacher, Sir Edmund, during the

afternoon hours fills me with anticipation and eagerness.

In our first discussion, we delved into the fundamentals of operation management

and productivity. Various terms that are not so foreign to me as a previous ABM student

such as productivity - the amount of outputs divided by inputs; production - the creation

of goods and services; single-factor productivity - the ratio of one input to the output;

and multi-factor productivity - the ratio of many or all resources to the products and

services produced were further explained. Also, our professor captivated us about the

Hard Rock Café, a multi-national world-class restaurant built in 1971 which later

diversified its business to gaming, hotel, and casinos. Studying its journey toward

success was a highlight of this discussion, providing me with invaluable insights that

remain among my favorites from this coursework.

The Operations Management’s key priorities at HRC involve ensuring an

effective work layout and optimized processes, which significantly contribute to

employees' efficient job performance. Managers meticulously inspect operations and


production processes to guarantee the timely and accurate serving of food with precise

measures, temperatures, and other essential factors. Having excellence as a chief point

in serving customers and an effective work lay-out set by the operations manager

became one of the reasons they maintained a great reputation and stimulate customers

and this should be noted by people who want to succeed in gaining trust from

customers.

Another reason why it became popular is that they are set apart from their

competitors in the restaurant industry. The allure of HRC extends beyond its delectable

menu and exceptional customer service, encompassing a meticulously curated interior

that stimulates customers. The café's ambiance, a pivotal factor in attracting visitors,

evolved from an ordinary restaurant into a stunning museum. Ever since the famous

singer Eric Clapton gave his guitar to the café as memorabilia to express his gratitude

for the excellent customer service he experienced at the restaurant, many respectable

artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson started leaving valuable things which

turned the restaurant into a larger attraction for greater audience.

Other than that, we also ventured our focus on the topic of production. As

mentioned in our discussion, business entities always consider the 3 major functions

that are important in the creation of goods and services which are the marketing,

production/ operation, and finance/accounting functions. These three functions

synergistically work together, making it the backbone of business operations.

Understanding the interconnectedness and significance of these functions offers a

profound insight into the intricate workings of businesses. It highlights the necessity of a

holistic approach to management, where each department's contribution is equally vital,


leading to the seamless creation and delivery of goods and services that meet market

demands while ensuring financial stability and growth. From this alone, I realized that a

lot of factors must be considered when engaging in the decision-making processes of a

business.

The success of any business hinges significantly on the capabilities of a skilled

individual responsible for managing its operations—the Operations Manager. Serving as

a pivotal backbone, these skilled professionals oversee the integral facets of

management, encompassing planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling,

often abbreviated as "POSDICON." It is disheartening to note the increasing scarcity of

effective operations managers today. Therefore, having the opportunity to learn the

intricacies of their roles can be a significant advantage for students like me who aspire

to become one in the future or for students who want to be knowledgeable enough

about how to transform inputs into outputs more efficiently.

To sum it all, my whole 2nd semester became much enjoyable as I bumped into

the amazing world of Operation Management. As a zealous student navigating through

the uncharted waters of business world, the lessons and stories that were shared from

this subject, from the hard rock café, production, management, and roles of operation

managers, became my beacon of hope. Recognizing the scarcity of skilled managers,

I'm driven not just by personal ambition but by a desire to empower future entrepreneurs

and proprietors with the transformative skills needed for success in the ever-evolving

landscape of business. The lessons that Sir Edmund nurtured upon us will fuel my drive

and will serve as the inputs that I will transform into skillful outputs that will be beneficial
not just for me, but for everyone. Surely, all the teachings I got from this will be

treasured forever.
