Welcome to this month’s newsletter. January has been packed with TV
attention, crew enquiries, fundraising and engaging new and exciting
backers. There’s been filming for an episode of America Unearthed on the
question of whether the Phoenicians reached the Americas, due to air on
the US Travel Channel in May/ June, and later internationally. We’ve met

with historian Dan Snow (the History Guy/ History Hit) who hopes to visit and
sail on Phoenicia at some point in the summer, and we have been executing
our plans to make Phoenicia seaworthy and ready for June when she will
sail from the UK to the Mediterranean.

I would like to thank all those who donated to the expedition via our
Crowdfunder campaign and to the individuals who have already signed up
to the 100 Phoenicians Club (read below). I am honoured to have your
support. However, I would like to take this opportunity to make an appeal -
the expedition urgently needs a lead corporate expedition sponsor to ensure
the expedition is sufficiently funded. If any readers are in a position to
consider this opportunity or know of someone who is, please get in touch.

Did you know?
Around 10km west of Ibiza Town on
the Balearic Island of Ibiza you will
find Sa Caleta Phoenician
settlement. A discovery so
impressive, that it led to the Island
receiving World Heritage Site status in
1999.
‘With the foundation of the
settlement at Sa Caleta, the
Balearic Islands entered history and
modernity. The Phoenicians
brought new, unknown concepts
to the island, such as town-
planning, pottery turned on a
wheel, iron metal works or writing,
among others.’

In around 600BC the Phoenicians
abandoned Sa Caleta in favour of
the bay of Eivissa, where they
founded the city of Eivissa.
100 Phoenicians Club
We are delighted to announce the opening of a new initiative recognising a
whole host of personalities, each of whom are individually supporting the
cross Atlantic expedition. The 100 Phoenicians Club went live on our website
today and already includes 10 personalities, including founder of Operation
Raleigh and the Scientific Exploration Society, Colonel John Blashford-Snell
CBE and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first man to sail solo non-stop around
the world!

TV and mentions
The sun shined on Phoenicia (and Philip) as a film crew from America
Unearthed was welcomed on board this month. They were delighted with
Philip’s expertly delivered stories about the vessel, the voyages it has made
and the Phoenicians. We look forward to seeing the results and how it
contributes to their Phoenician episode later this year.
Dan Snow (the History Guy) captivated the Tivoli audience in Wimborne on 21st
January. On tour to inspire the nation and to promote History Hit TV, we were
delighted to discuss the expedition with Dan before he took to the stage and
to have received mention within his performance. Dan’s on a mission to sail
every historical replica ship going and we look forward to having him on
board Phoenicia.
