Class 10 Inserting the missing character 9593751369

Introduction
Inserting a missing figure problems are generally asked in various competitive exams, which
mainly consist of a figure divided into various regions. In between these regions, there will be
numbers, letters or it may be the combination of letters and numbers following certain sequence.
They are in a series inside the given figure.

The question may contain single figure or combination of two or more than two figures. The
question figure may be any geometrical figure such as rectangle, triangle, circle or other any type
of unusual figure to have set of numbers or letters in it.

The figure may be divided into many parts according to logic and sequence behind the question.
In question figure, the numbers or letters given will be changing in each step by following certain
sequence or logic.

Student has to analyze sequence or number or logic and to choose correct answer from given
options.

 MOST COMMON PATTERNS: Different types of patterns could be there, some of them are
as follows:

 It could be a sum of two numbers divided by a constant.

 It could be average of numbers.

 It could be in the form of alphabets, where alphabets are increased by constant or increased by
square of numbers or increased by prime numbers.

 It could be the difference of product of two diametrically opposite numbers.

 It could be the difference of sum of adjacent numbers.

 The difference of the numbers could be in the pattern 𝟏𝟑 ± 𝟏, 𝟐𝟑 ± 𝟏, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐧.

 The difference of the numbers could be in the pattern 𝟏𝟐 ± 𝟏, 𝟐𝟐 ± 𝟏, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐧.

 Numbers could be 12, 22, 32 and so on… or 13, 23, 33, and so on.

 The difference could be prime numbers or difference could be square of prime numbers.

 The difference could be in the form of ×N+N or ×2+1, ×2+2, ×2+3 and so on.

 Numbers could be ×1, ×2, ×3 and so on, etc.

 Type – 1
In this type of questions, a single figure will be given which consists of letters or numbers inside it
following certain sequence or logic as explained by following example.

Example − 1

(A) 83 (B) 54 (C) 65 (D) 60

Solution (C) − In this example, the question figure has four regions inside which there are numbers
which are interchanging their position in next step so 56 may be written as 65 to replace question mark.

This type of question may consist of a figure divided into many parts to have numbers or letters in it as
shown below,

And so many

Example − 2

(A) 150 (B) 145 (C) 165 (D) 162

Solution (D): The numbers at the bottom row are obtained as (28 - 10) × 10 = 180, (29 - 17) × 11 = 132,
(35-24) × 14 = 154, therefore missing number is (54 - 36) × 9 = 162.

 Type – 2
In type of figure, the question will consist of two or more than two figures of which 1st one or two figures
giving information about sequence or logic of question, reader has to analyze them and choose the
correct answer as explain by the following example,

Example − 3

(A) 36 (B) 40 (C) 45 (D) None of these

Solution (C) : In the above figure, the numbers are related as from 1 st and 2nd figure that (5 + 3) = 8 =
(23-15), similarly answer can be found as (34 + 11) = 45 = (90 – 45). Therefore missing number is 45.

Solved Examples :
1: Find the missing character from the given figure.

Solution: By observing the given pattern: moving in clockwise direction,

4 x 1 = 4; 4 x 2 = 8; 8 x 3 = 24; 24 x 4 = 96; 96 x 5 = 480; 480 x 6 = 2880
So, required number = 2880.

2: Find the missing character from the given alternative.

Solution: Consider A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, ……., X = 24, Y = 25, Z = 26.

By observing the given figure, F + P = 6 + 16 = 22; G + N = 7 + 14 = 21; J + E = 10 + 5 = 15
Since K = 11, so value corresponding to missing letter = 27 – 11 = 16.
Hence, missing letter is the 16th letter of the English alphabet i.e. P.

3: Find the missing character from the given pattern.

Solution: By observing the given pattern

[(5×6×4) ÷ 10] = 12. Now missing character is [(4×8×10) ÷ 10] = 32

4: Find the missing character from the given pattern.

Solution: By observing the given pattern

[(13+19) ÷ 8] = 4; [(71 + 9) ÷ 8 = 10]; So, missing character = [(128 + 32) ÷ 8] = 20

5: Find the missing character from the given figure.

Solution: From the first figure [(56 + 15) – (22 + 8)] = 41

From the second figure, [(46 + 9) – (10 + 6)] = 39
Now, missing number = [(34 + 11) – (14 + 6)] = 25
Hence, missing number is 25.

6: Find the missing character from the given figure.

Solution: (b) The pattern is [(16 – 6)2 + (5 – 2)2]= 102 + 32 = 109; [(22 – 15)2 + (21 – 19)2]= 72 + 22 = 53
So, the missing number = [(17 – 13)2 + (51 – 48)2]= 42 + 32 = 25

7) Find the missing character from the given figure.

(A) 18 (B) 20 (C) 21 (D) 51

Solution:The numbers are changing diagonally from left side top wing to right side bottom wing it is
increased by 2 in the wings while increasing by 3 in central square and same sequence is followed from
left side bottom wing to right side top wing. Hence it is clear that 20 is the missing number.

8) Find the missing character from the given figure.

(A) 10 (B) 13 (C) 15 (D) 12

st
Solution: In the 1 column [(11-5) × 2] = 12. ∴ it is clear that missing number is, [(8-3) × 2] = 10.

9) Find the missing character from the given figure.

(A) 35 (B) 47 (C) 39 (D) 45

Solution: The middle number in each shape is equal to the sum of the product of the digits opposite to
each other ; [(3×4) + (5×5)] = 37 ; [(4×4) + ( 7×5)] = 51

10) Find the missing character from the given figure.

(A) 4 (B) 6 (C) 8 (D) 10

Solution: In the first two columns of the given matrix, we see that after dividing the multiplication of first
and third numbers of each column by the second number, we get the fourth number.
