Pros and cons of teens using social medias

Today it seems like the most vital thing for a teen’s survival in this modern society is social
media. There is no doubt that the first thing we do after waking up every morning is to grab our
phones and head straight to apps like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, BeReal and many, many more.
What does that irresistible habit of our generation bring to the table?
Social media has a variety of uses because it works on algorithms. Social media algorithms are
designed to match a user’s taste and interests, providing you with the most suitable and
relevant content. For example, if you are interested in science and start looking for hashtags
and posts about biology, chemistry etc., at one point your feed will be full of information on
those topics: news about new inventions, discoveries, innovations, and others. The same goes
for any matter, hobby, or interest you have. In this way, social media is a fast and easily
accessible source of knowledge and a helpful tool for teens. Another benefit of social media is
that almost every teen uses it, which allows us to meet with people from around the world,
make new friendships and learn about different cultures and traditions.
However, the usage of social media can be dangerous. Containing so much information within
reach of a click, social media can be a reason for misinformation among youngsters. That occurs
not only when we read false educational articles but also when we form our opinion on
important topics like politics, global warming, future careers etc. Another side of social media is
its addictive nature. Teens start to feel like they need to be online non-stop and to check every
notification immediately. That can become a big distraction and cause a lack of concentration
when dealing with schoolwork, resulting in bad grades.
With all said, we can see that social media brings a lot of possibilities for teens to expand their
knowledge, but the same as every other tool, it has its disadvantages. I think that no matter
how or for what we teens use social media, it should be wisely and with the knowledge of its
pros and cons.
