E. Noun Clauses
I. Definition
Noun clause (mệnh đề danh từ) là mệnh đề phụ có chức năng như một danh từ. Mệnh
đề danh từ là một nhóm từ bao gồm chủ từ và động từ chính của chính chủ từ đó.
Mệnh đề danh từ có chức năng là một chủ từ, một túc từ, hoặc một bổ ngữ cho chủ từ.
II. Formation

That + S + [V] ……
If/Whether …. (or not) + S + [V] …
Whether …. (or not) + S + [V] ….
Question Words (Wh-words) + S + [V] …..

Ex: 1. I am afraid that the coming examination is difficult.

2. The teacher doesn’t know if you understand the lesson (or not).
3. I wonder what happened to him last week.
4. Mary can’t recognize which dog is my sister’s.
5. We know whose book it is.
Note: There is no subject and verb conversion within a noun clause. (Không có đảo
ngữ trong mệnh đề danh từ.)
III. Functions of Noun Clauses
1. Subject to a verb
Ex: 1.That the man is guilty is obvious to everyone.
2. Why he left here without saying a word is a mystery.
3. What you are doing seems difficult.
4. How the prisoner escaped is a complete mystery.
5. Why Peter loves Mary was his next remark.

2. Object of a verb
Ex: 1. Nobody knows why he was absent.
2. Helen told us that she had bought three tickets.
3. I shall accept whatever he offers.
4. He asked her where she lived.
5. George said that he was pleased to welcome us.

3. Object of a preposition
Ex: 1.We argued for hours about when we should start.
2. They will be very thankful for whatever you can give them.
3. He only laughed at what we said.
4. Those students always pay attention to whatever the teacher is saying.
5. It all depends on how I try to do this work.

4. In apposition to a noun
Ex: 1.The news that we are having a holiday tomorrow is not true.
2. The idea that you can do this working without thinking is quite wrong.

3. The fact that the prisoner was guilty was plain to everyone.
4. It is a truth that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of
a wife.

5. Used with a number of adjectives or complement to predicative adjectives.

Ex: 1. I’m certain that I posted the letter.
2. She is very glad that you are able to come.
3. He is quite confident that he will pass the exam.
4. I’m sorry that your brother is ill.

IV. Sequences of Tenses in Sentences Containing Noun Clauses

1. Khi động từ chính (ở mệnh đề chính) ở hiện tại thì động từ ở mệnh đề danh từ là:
 Tương lai nếu hành động xảy ra sau đó
Ex: He thinks that the exam next week is going to be/will be hard.
 Hiện tại nếu hành động xảy ra cùng thời điểm
Ex: He thinks that Mary is taking the exam right now.
 Quá khứ nếu hành động xảy ra trước đó
Ex: He thinks that George took the exam yesterday.
2. Khi động từ chính (ở mệnh đề chính) ở quá khứ thì động từ ở mệnh đề danh từ là:
 “Were/was + going to + Vo” hoặc “would + Vo” nếu hành động xảy ra sau đó
Ex: He thought that the exam the following week was going to be/would be hard.
 Quá khứ nếu hành động xảy ra cùng thời điểm
Ex: He thought that Mary was taking the exam then.
 Quá khứ hoàn thành nếu hành động xảy ra trước đó
Ex: He thought that George had taken the exam the day before.
3. Nếu hành động ở mệnh đề danh từ ở tương lai, ta vẫn chia động từ ở tương lai
mặc dù động từ chính ở quá khứ
Ex: The astronauts said that people will live on other planets someday.
4. Nếu hành động ở mệnh đề danh từ còn đang tiếp diễn ở hiện tại, hoặc diễn đạt
một chân lý, một sự thật; ta chia động từ ở hiện tại đơn mặc dù động từ chính ở
quá khứ
Ex: 1.We learned that English is not easy.
2. The boys knew that the sun rises in the East.
V. Special Case (Subjunctive Mood)

S + [V] + that + S + (not) Vo

Ex: 1.Our teacher advised that we go to school on time.
2. He insisted that he be the captain next.
3. I strongly recommend that he not go out last night.
4. It is vital that Mary come here on time.
Some common verbs for this structure: ask, advise, command, demand, insist, order,
prefer, propose, recommend, require, request, suggest, urge, [be] essential, [be]
necessary, [be] vital, [be] important, [be] urgent, ….
