Small RAD Markers for printing

RAD (Ringed Automatically Detected) markers are a type of artificial target that can be used for scan registration. Each marker is
unique; this means that when a unique marker is found in two scans, the registration software knows that the center points of the
marker in each scan correspond exactly. Markers can also be helpful when scanning areas that do not have well-defined planes, or
if you want to register a handheld scan with a FARO Focus Scanner. The markers in this document have been scaled to make them
appropriate for most hand-held scanning applications. Use full size markers when making scans with the FARO Focus scanners.

If you need markers that you can reuse, or if you plan to use the markers on surfaces that are uneven, consider gluing the printed
markers to binder-board or a similar flat, rigid material.

Rules for using markers

• Marker IDs must be unique within a project. Ensure that you do not include two markers with the same ID in the scan area.
• Place only on flat surfaces.
• Do not move the markers until the scan project is finished. Especially outdoors, you can place weights (e.g., stones) on the
corners of the markers. The weights must not cover or cast a shadow on the pattern on the marker.
• The pattern must be easily and clearly visible.
• Position the markers in an irregular pattern. Do not position symmetrically.
• Place in different distances to the object. Avoid a linear alignment.
• Ideally, a marker should be captured at least twice in each handheld scan.
