MODULE 6: WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION

Learning Task
1) What are the three purposes of workplace writing? Explain each.

 Purpose- According to George Searles, author of “Workplace Communication: The Basics,”

nearly all workplace writing is done for at least one of these three purposes: (1) to recreate a
record; (2) to request or provide information; (3) to persuade. So, before attempting to compose a
letter, you must first do some thinking in order to identify which of the three purposes applies.
 Audience- Before you communicate, you must first understand what type of audience are you
trying to communicate with. Are they formal? What’s their personality? What are their
occupations. These things must be considered.
 Tone- After determining your target audience and what you want to say, you now have to
identify the tone in your discourse. The tone will set how your target audience will accept what
you are trying to say. Ideally, you have to set a climate of formality in your communication style.

2) What should you do if a problem had been caused by you?

If a problem or issue had been caused by you or the group you represent, you have to include an
apology in your communication.

3) Why should you not include the specifics of your mistake?

You have to remember not to include the specifics of your mistake because it may be used as
evidences if the situation gets out of hand. You just simply acknowledge that a mistake was made and
apologize for it.
4) Why is tone important in workplace communication?
The tone of voice transmits emotion when you communicate with others. Not only does your tone
influence how others see you, but it also persuades their desire to listen to you, particularly in the
workplace.

Module No.9: INCIDENT REPORT

Learning Task
Activity. Write a report about a recent incident in your home, school or in your community that you have
personally witnessed.

BARANGAY GORDON HEIGHTS HALL

MEMORANDUM

DATE: 19 October 2013

TO: CAP. PRISCILLA PONGE

Barangay Captain

FROM: MARIE PEARL NARIO

Resident

SUBJECT: Incident Report

On the night of May 07, 2023, five people went on a street fight. Some got injured and the residents are
greatly alarmed by this incident.
DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT
It is rampant in our community that there are several of men drinking alcohol on the streets almost every
night. This is the primary reason why some people are terrified of going home late and also the reason
why street fighting often occurs in our place.

RECOMMENDATION
In order to avoid such incidents, I strongly recommend the reimplementation of curfew. In addition, I also
want to address my concern regarding barangay officers in charge, because I feel that they are being very
lenient and negligent in terms of implementing rules and regulations. As a trusted authority, it is their
duty and responsibility to comply with their obligations, and to ensure the safety of the community. I am
hoping that you will take necessary actions for this matter. Thank you and have a good day.
