II. READ the following passage and CHOOSE the best answer for each question.
THE TIN CAN AND THE CAN OPENER
“Can” it or “can” it not be open?
In the old days, it was very difficult to keep food fresh. Meat and fish needed to be salted or dried to
last through the winter. Vegetables were difficult to store and rotted quickly.
In 1810, a British merchant invented the tin can. This was very important because food could be kept
for a very long time in cans. This meant that food could be transported by ship to all countries in the
British Empire, for example India or Australia.
The first tin can factory was opened in 1813, but things went very slowly to begin with. The machines
could only make 6 tins an hour. It took another 33 years before a new machine was introduced that
could produce 60 tins an hour.
The first tin cans were not very user-friendly. They were so thick that people had to use a hammer to
open them, and quite often that ruined the food inside. So, at first, tin cans were not very popular.
In 1866, an American made a new type of can. The new can was smart because it had a key opener
to go with it. You can still buy this type of can in the supermarket today with sardines in it.
A few years later another American, William Lyman, got a patent for his new can opener. He invented
the can opener that has a small wheel that rolls around and cuts the top of the tin can off.
