The role of social media and other online platforms in women trafficking
Esteemed chair, distinguished delegates,
Today, we come together to address an urgent concern necessitating our immediate attention: the impact of social media and digital platforms on the matter of women trafficking. Imagine a world, interlinked through the internet, where we exchange life experiences, interest and aspirations. Yet, hidden within this digital realm, a malevolent element exists that targets the susceptible, particularly woman. Once a symbol of hope and connectivity, social media has evolved into and instrument for human traffickers to exploit, recruit and manipulate their victims. They employ these platforms to groom and deceive unsuspecting women, ensnaring them in a world of anguish. However, inaction is not an optional! We must harness the potential of the web for virtuous purposes, countering this menace, we can reinforce our battle against women trafficking by: 1. Enhancing our knowledge and educating our communities regarding the perils associated with online recruitment 2. Advocating for more stringent (leaving no doubt) regulations on social media platforms to monitor and report suspicious activities. 3. Backing organizations and initiatives dedicating to raising awareness and extending aid to victims. On October 30, 2022, the Standing Committee of the 13th national people’s congress, China’s top legislative body, passed the revised the Law on the Protection of women’s rights and interest. The amended law which took effect on January 1st 2023, added nearly 30 new provisions to enhance women’s protection in areas ranging from gender equality in recruitment and contract negotiation, employer’s obligations in sexual harassment prevention, as well as relief measures to women should their rights and interests being harmed. Collectively, we can transform these digital platforms into secure environments where women find protection rather than exploitation Let us utilize the very tools that have been misused to empower, uplift and safeguard women across the globe. It is time to eradicate the dark side of the internet and deliver justice to those deserving of it. Thank you.
