Title: What is the role of self-motivation for academic success?

Introduction:

Self-motivation is very important in attaining academic success, because it helps drive


you to achieve your academic commitments and goals. When you are not self-
motivated, you might encounter challenges and difficulties achieving academic fortune
and this might lead to failure.

It is crucial to stay self-motivated, because the right motivation will enable you as a
scholar understand and gain the relevant knowledge and skills to pursue your studies
and achieve academic success. As a scholar, you will remain active and focused in all
your study areas, and pay more attention to detail and to your courses during the length
of your study.

At the same time, a scholar or student who lacks self-motivation loses focus, direction
and interest and this in the end leads to bad grades and performance.

A self-motivated student is very responsible and goal-oriented, hardworking, ambitious


and strives for excellence in all he/she does; in addition, self-motivation is very
important in going through challenges and obstacles.

Even when faced with obstacles, a self-motivated student is able to look for and find
solutions for every challenge faced and this helps the student be more aware and ready
for them any other time faced, this improves problem-solving skills and enables the
student adapt to any situation faced.

Throughout my academic journey, I have encountered countless setbacks and


obstacles, where I was at the point of giving up, but because I had the inner self-
motivation in me, I kept going and realized that without that drive, I would never achieve
my academic goals so in the end that is what pushed me.

Self-motivation instills discipline, commitment and focus all of which are important to
help you develop essential life skills, a student who has self-motivation develops and
grows personally, that student at the same time is efficient in time management,
organization of their duties, good planning and execution of tasks.

It is important to have self-drive and motivation, this gives you a purpose in life.
Surrounding yourself with positive factors or influence for example your immediate
family, friends and colleagues can go a long way in boosting your self-confidence and
this in turn results in your having or developing self-motivation to do different things in
life.

In this regard, self-motivation is critical for academic success, in that as a student, you
remain focused, active and engaged in your academic journey and you set goals that
are achievable.

Self-motivated students tend to be more confident, bold and courageous; they exercise
high independence and ability to overcome obstacles and succeed in their academic
path, it is important that they believe in themselves, so that they can attain their
academic goals.

On the contrary, students who are not self-motivated struggle a lot and are most often
disinterested in their studies and academic journey, creating a gap that leads to
academic failure and poor performance academically.

Therefore, it is crucial that a conducive environment is created and fostered so that


students can stay self-motivated, encouraged and fulfilled throughout their academic
journey. This can be created by a positive culture of teaching students to create goals
and also manage their time well.

Self-motivation nurtures personal growth and prepares students to overcome difficulties,


obstacles and also build skill to manage and problem solve all educational challenges,
throughout our educational journey, we have all faced difficult times and challenges but
that has never deterred our pursuit for academic excellence and success.

With this said, academic excellence is dependent on personal self-motivation, it
encourages students to be ready to face academic obstacles and develop good
problem solving skills, this in turn leads to academic prosperity and success.

Lastly, self-motivated students are adept at managing their time efficiently. Time
management is a critical factor in achieving academic success, and its successful
implementation hinges on self-motivation, which encompasses performance, efficacy,
and drive (Brigitte et al., 2005, cited in Khan, 2015, p. 66).

In conclusion, self-motivation goes above and beyond in making sure that students
excel in all spheres of life generally and mostly in their academic pursuits, because it
gives you a sense of purpose and determination to fulfil all your targeted goals and
objectives.
