Evaluating ELT Materials

Instructional materials in language teaching are the most crucial in crafting your lesson. Crucial because there is only one
out of two results in your lesson, may it be successful or unsuccessful. If a teacher uses an inappropriate choice of
materials for the day, materials that do not meet the needs of the students, surely it will not hook their interests. As a
result, your delivery of the lesson is somewhat unuseful since your students got nothing from it. Therefore, as a teacher, it
would be a challenge for us to master planning our instructional materials well, based on our objective and goal from that
specific lesson.

Thus, for us to be guided as well in crafting our materials we have this so-called Evaluating English Language Teaching
(ELT) Materials. This evaluation serves as a guide and criteria as to how and when are we going to modify, add, and omit
something in our materials. It is useful for us teachers to do an external evaluation of materials in order to gain an
overview of the organizational principles. On the other hand, the internal evaluation of the materials aims to see how far
the materials are appropriate to the aim and objectives of the teaching lesson.

External Evaluation

For my upcoming teaching demonstration, I have made 2 instructional materials so far. But in this evaluation, I dwell
more on the major one. The focus of my lesson is Punctuation Rules. The first IM is called 'Punctuation Flip Chart'. Its
description would quickly tell the learners that this flip chart is composed only of the rules, nothing more, nothing less. It
means, other things like the correct usage of pronouns and nouns are separated from this chart. It follows the correct usage
of the language, like grammar, and of course punctuation marks since it is the focus of the lesson it must be used
correctly. It would also promote engagement because the topic itself is motivating to the students. However, it does not
target multiple learning styles of the students, as per my observation. It is more on students who are visual learners and as
we all know not everyone is a visual learner. But it would encourage students to speak because as we learn punctuation,
we are also expected to base our tone on whatever punctuation is being used. Furthermore, the tasks and activities
provided are designed to have a real communicative purpose rather than simply being an excuse to practice specific
features. Since it is intended for Grade 7 students, the proficiency level of this material claim to be a particular level, such
as for beginners.

Internal Evaluation

The aim of this is to analyze the extent to which the aforementioned factors in the external evaluation stage match up with
the internal consistency and organization of the materials.

In terms of the presentation of the skills, it is not apparent but is manifested during the activity part. Wherein the students
will be given sentences without punctuation yet and based on the lesson they are the ones to choose the correct
punctuation marks based on the structure of the sentence given. In addition, the sequencing of the material is good
because it started on the most known one, like the period. In that way, little by little the students are being immersed with
what is the flow of the lesson. The speaking materials also incorporate what the students know about the nature of real
interaction or dialogues. Like the examples given, it is more of sentences that students easily understand as well as can
relate to. Moreover, the tests and exercises for the learner are based and what is taught in the lesson, it does not make
another test that has no connection to the discussion.

The materials will motivate both students and teachers. It should not only motivate on my part because I am the one who
made the materials but more so the students. After all, they are the main reason for doing such materials.

Overall Evaluation:

The usability factor: It is the part where I need to modify the material since I am from another municipality, if the weather
is not cooperating, the material will be damaged by the rain because it is made of colored paper. The modification that I
will do is to make the lamination. To make it more usable in the long run.

The adaptability factor: As the maker, I am confident that my materials are adaptable as I can use them in other way
around. Literally speaking, if another topic should be taught again, I can still utilize it if and when I can prove that these
are effective on my students' end.
