by winning the Dakar Rally for the fourth time.
His latest victory in the 2024 rally marks him as
the oldest winner of this gruelling race. Sainz,
also known as ‘El Matador’, is renowned for his
extraordinary skills and endurance in one of the
most challenging motorsport events in the
world.

The Khelo India Winter Games 2024 is


the fourth edition of the annual event
in the Khelo India calendar.

The mascot of the Khelo India Winter Games 2024 is


a snow leopard. It has been named ‘Sheen-e She’ or
Shan in Ladakh region.

Shri Anurag Singh Thakur gave away the trophies


at the closing ceremony of the Khelo India Youth
Games 2023 Tamil Nadu in Chennai.

Maharashtra finished in the top position with a total of 158 medals

DEFENCE
The UAE Land Forces contingent comprising 45
personnel arrived in India to participate in the 1st
edition of the India - UAE Joint Military Exercise
‘DESERT CYCLONE’. The Exercise is conducted
in Mahajan, Rajasthan.
The Indian Army contingent comprising 25
personnel reached Egypt to take part in the 2nd
edition of India-Egypt Joint Special Forces
Exercise CYCLONE. The Exercise was
conducted at Anshas, Egypt. The first edition of
the exercise was conducted last year in India.
The 11th edition of India-Kyrgyzstan Joint Special
Forces Exercise KHANJAR has commenced at the
Special Forces Training School in Bakloh,
Himachal Pradesh.
The inaugural edition of India-Saudi Arabia
Joint Military Exercise ‘SADA TANSEEQ’
commenced at Mahajan, Rajasthan.
The Saudi Arabian contingent comprising 45 personnel is being
represented by Royal Saudi Land Forces. The Indian Army
contingent also comprising 45 personnel is being represented by a
Battalion from the Brigade of the Guards (Mechanised Infantry).
The Indian Army has launched Operation Sarvashakti in
Jammu and Kashmir. It involves security forces on both
sides of the Pir Panjal range. The goal is to flush out
terrorists who have ambushed Indian troops in Rajouri
and Poonch.
The operation is on the lines of Operation Sarpvinash of 2003, which
was launched against terrorists south of the Pir Panjal range, which
lasted three months and resulted in the elimination of nearly 100
terrorists.

The Defence Research and Development
Organisation of India, in a significant
advancement, introduced ‘Ugram,’ an
advanced 7.62 x 51 mm calibre assault rifle.

Defence Research and Development Organisation


(DRDO) conducted a successful flight-test of the
New Generation AKASH (AKASH-NG) missile
from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur
off the coast of Odisha.
Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt flagged off the
indigenously developed and manufactured Astra Missiles
for supply to the Indian Air Force.

Indigenous SARVATRA Bridge Systems is


Developed by DRDO and Produced by BEML
for the Indian Army. Sarvatra is the multi-span
mobile bridge with a high mobility launch
platform & multi-span capability up to 75 m
with individual spans of 15 m.

NATO has announced to launch its biggest


military exercise since the Cold War named -
Steadfast Defender-2024. The drills will
involve around 90,000 personnel, more than
50 ships, over 80 aircraft, and at least 1,100
combat vehicles.

In the 2024 Global Firepower Military Strength


Rankings, the US secured the top position, with
Russia and China following. India claimed the
4th spot. Bhutan ranks lowest with a power index
of 6.3704.

DEFENCE
Exercise “Sahyog-Kaijin” between coast guards
of India & Japan conducted off the coast of
Chennai. Japanese Coast Guard Ship Yashima &
ICG ships and other assets including 9 vessels,
and 6 aircraft from Eastern Region participated &
carried out joint operations like search & rescue,
pollution response and fire fighting

The maiden Bilateral Maritime Exercise


between the Indian Navy (IN) and
Royal Thai Navy (RTN) was conducted.
Indigenously built Indian Naval ships
Kulish and IN LCU 56 participated in
the inaugural edition of the exercise.
The 36th edition of India-Thailand
Coordinated Patrol (Indo-Thai
CORPAT) was also conducted along
with the maiden bilateral exercise.
The Indo-Thai Bilateral Exercise is being named as ‘Ex-Ayutthaya’,
which literally translates to ‘The Invincible One’ or ‘Undefeatable’,
and symbolises the significance of two of the oldest cities Ayodhya
in India and Ayutthaya in Thailand, the historic legacies, rich
cultural ties and shared historical narratives dating back to several
centuries.

The exercise aims to enhance synergy and
interoperability amongst participating
navies from US, Australia, South Korea
and Japan through professional
interactions on ground and in air.

Indian Navy swiftly responded to the hijacking
incident onboard Liberian flagged Bulk Carrier MV
Lila Norfolk deploying considerable strength of assets
(both ships and aircraft) and an aggressive intent to
counter attack by pirates.
Responding swiftly to the developing situation, Indian Navy launched
a Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) and has diverted INS Chennai
deployed for Maritime Security Operations to assist the vessel.
25T Bollard Pull (BP) Tug, Bhishm was
launched by Cmde S Sreekumar, Warship
Production Superintendent (Kolkata) at
M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (M/s
TRSL), Kolkata. This Tug is a proud flag
bearer of “Make in India” initiative of
Govt of India.
Indian Navy's Fast Attack Craft INS

Contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders

The Indian Navy's indigenously designed
and built survey ship, INS Nirupak, was
decommissioned after 38 years of illustrious
service to the nation in a ceremony, presided
by Vice Admiral Adhir Arora, AVSM, NM,
Chief Hydrographer to the Govt of India at
Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam

Indian Navy Ships Cheetah, Guldar


and Kumbhir were decommissioned
on 12 Jan 2024 after rendering four
decades of glorious service to the
nation.

The decommissioning event was conducted at Port Blair in a


traditional ceremony wherein the National Flag, the Naval Ensign
and Decommissioning Pennants of the three ships were lowered for
the last time, at sunset.
The Indian Navy on Wednesday got
its first indigenous medium-altitude
long-endurance (MALE) drone, the
Drishti 10 Starliner unmanned aerial
vehicle (UAV), which will boost its
intelligence, surveillance, and
reconnaissance capabilities.
It has been built by Adani Defence and Aerospace at its Hyderabad
facility with technology transfer from Israeli defence firm Elbit
Systems.
Indian Army will observe the year 2024 as the ‘Year
of Tech Absorption’ and focus its efforts in leveraging
technology as an enabler towards a transformative
change.

The Indian Navy has strategically chosen
Telangana as the location for its second Very
Low Frequency (VLF) communication
transmission station in the country. This
significant development is set to take place in
the Vikarabad district, with the new VLF
center scheduled for completion by 2027.

The third edition of Project ‘Veer Gatha’, a


joint initiative of Ministry of Defence and
Ministry of Education as part of Republic Day
celebrations, has witnessed an overwhelming
pan India response. Approx. 1.37 crore students
from around 2.43 lakh schools participated in
the initiative, with 100 winners being selected
at the national level.

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic
Sciences (CCRAS) along with National Commission
for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has launched
'SMART 2.0' (Scope for Mainstreaming Ayurveda
Research among Teaching professionals) program.
It aims to promote robust clinical studies in priority areas of
Ayurveda with Ayurveda academic institutions/hospitals across the
country through mutual collaboration.

Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate


Change has submitted three nominations from
India for Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) of
Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya
Pradesh) & Udaipur (Rajasthan) under the
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Punjab has achieved a significant milestone in


road safety. The state has become the first in
India to meticulously map all 784 accident black
spots using the Mappls App, a cutting-edge
navigation system developed by MapMyIndia.

The Tamil Nadu and Singapore governments


collaborate to finalise the framework for India’s
first Net Zero Industrial Park in Chennai in one
year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the
Demonstration Fast Reactor Fuel Reprocessing
Plant (DFRP) at the Indira Gandhi Centre for
Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, to the
nation.

Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the
27th National Youth Festival in Nashik,
Maharashtra.
The theme for National Youth Day
2024 is “Arise, Awake, and Realise the
Power You Hold.”

The National Youth Festival is organized every year from 12th to


16th January, with the 12th of January being the birth anniversary
of Swami Vivekananda. The host state for the Festival this year is
Maharashtra. The theme of this year’s Festival is Viksit Bharat@

Suchetha Satish set a world record by singing in
an unprecedented 140 languages during a single
concert, held at the Indian Consulate Auditorium
in Dubai, UAE, as part of the "Concert for
Climate" to raise awareness about climate change.

World Hindi Day is being observed on 10 January. The day


is commemorated every year with the objective to promote
use of Hindi language abroad.

The “Maratha Military Landscapes of India”
will be India’s nomination for recognition as
UNESCO World Heritage List for the year
2024-25. The twelve component parts of this
nomination are, Salher fort, Shivneri fort,
Lohgad, Khanderi fort, Raigad, Rajgad,
Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijay
durg, Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and
Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.
Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change
submits proposals for Wetland City Accreditation under
the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands for cities of Indore,
Bhopal and Udaipur.
These are the first three Indian cities for which nominations have
been submitted for WCA based on the proposals received from
respective State Wetlands Authorities in collaboration with the

West Bengal has acquired a Geographical


Indication (GI) tag for some products
which include Sundarban honey, Black
Nunia rice from Jalpaiguri district and
Tangail, Gorod and Kadiyal sarees.

The three products, which are indigenous


to the state of Arunachal Pradesh, having
received the GI tag are: Adi Kekir (ginger),
handmade carpets and Wancho wooden
craft.

Kachchhi Kharek, the historic date variety


from Kutch, Gujarat, has received the second
fruit-related geographical indication (GI) tag
in the state, acknowledging its cultivation
roots dating back 400-500 years.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has
launched K-SMART (Kerala Solutions for
Managing Administrative Reformation and
Transformation), the first of its kind project
in the country aimed at making available all
services of local self government institutions
over a uniform digital platform. K-SMART
ensures easy access of most vital services to
the common public.
The Kerala Drug Control Department has
taken a proactive step to combat the growing
threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
through Operation Amrith (Antimicrobial
Resistance Intervention For Total Health).
This initiative aims to curb the overuse of
antibiotics in the state by conducting surprise
raids in pharmacies and detecting over-the-
counter (OTC) sales of antibiotics without a
doctor’s prescription.

the rare Tibetan Brown Bear (scientific name:
Ursus arctos pruinosus) was recorded in the high
altitudes of North Sikkim.
The Government of Maharashtra has
declared a new Conservation Reserve in
the forest land of Sangli district namely
'Atpadi Conservation Reserve'. The newly
formed Atpadi Conservation Reserve
connects the Maini Conservation Area in
the west with the Maldhok Bird Sanctuary
in the northeast.

Pench Tiger Reserve, located in Maharashtra, has
achieved distinction as India's inaugural Dark Sky
Park, ranking fifth in Asia.

A rare golden tiger was spotted in Kaziranga National Park,


Assam.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has unveiled


plans for the establishment of the world’s first ‘black
tiger safari’ near the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in
Mayurbhanj.
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological
Park (PNHZP) in West Bengal, also known
as Darjeeling Zoo, has received international
recognition from WAZA for its successful
Conservation Breeding Programme (CBC)
for snow leopards, showcasing its
commitment to wildlife conservation.

Mosquitofish, used to fight mosquitoes, has become


invasive in India.

Wildlife biologists consider mosquitofish to be among the hundred


most detrimental invasive alien species in India, researchers have
found, based on a genetic study, that two species of the fish, Gambusia
affinis and Gambusia holbrooki, had taken over many ecosystems
across the country, the former especially in northeast India.

NHAI's 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' initiative is


strategically designed to prevent the prevalent
practice of using a single FASTag for multiple
vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a
specific vehicle. The aim is to ensure individual
accountability and efficient toll collection at
Toll Plazas.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has
successfully launched X-ray Polarimeter Satellite
(XPoSat) aboard Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle
PSLV-C58.
This mission marks India’s first dedicated scientific endeavor to study
the polarisation of cosmic X-rays from celestial sources. The satellite
was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota,
Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has said


that the INSAT-3DS satellite has been flagged off to the
launch port at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in
Sriharikota.

The satellite is designed for enhanced meteorological observations


and monitoring of land and ocean surfaces for weather forecasting
and disaster warning.
The commercial arm of ISRO, NewSpace India Limited
(NSIL) will launch GSAT-20 (renamed as GSAT-N2),
on-board SpaceX’s Falcon-9 during the second quarter
of 2024. The GSAT-20 is a high- throughput Ka-band
Satellite which will be fully owned, operated and
funded by NSIL.

ISRO informed that Aditya L1 has successfully entered the


Halo orbit around the L1 point.

Note : ISRO has developed 'Distress Alert Transmitter' (DAT) for


fisherman.

Corruption Perceptions Index 2023
has been released by Transparency
International showing that most
countries have made little to no
progress in tackling public sector
corruption.
The CPI ranks 180 countries and
territories around the globe by
their perceived levels of public
sector corruption, scoring on a
scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100
(very clean).
Top Three Countries: Denmark with a score of 90 tops the index for
the sixth consecutive year, with Finland and New Zealand following
closely with scores of 87 and 85, respectively.
India's rank in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023 has
slipped to 93 out of 180 countries, with a score of 39.

The National Board for Wildlife meeting


in New Delhi witnessed the release of the
report on the Status of Snow Leopards in
India by the Union Minister of
Environment, Forest, and Climate Change
(MoEFCC).

This report is a result of the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in


India (SPAI) Program, a significant scientific exercise that provides
crucial insights into the snow leopard population in India.
The SPAI exercise recorded a snow leopard population of 718
individuals in India, providing crucial data for conservation efforts.
The report detailed the estimated presence of snow leopards in different
states: Ladakh (477), Uttarakhand (124), Himachal Pradesh (51),
Arunachal Pradesh (36), Sikkim (21), and Jammu and Kashmir (9).

Department of School Education & Literacy,
Ministry of Education, Government of India has
launched ‘Prerana: An Experiential Learning
program’, aiming to offer a meaningful, unique,
and inspiring experience to all participants, thereby
empowering them with leadership qualities.
Prerana is driven by a strong commitment to integrate principles of
Indian education system and the philosophy of value-based education
which is a corner stone of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The Indian government, has launched


“PRITHvi VIgyan” scheme for the
Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The scheme, to be implemented


between 2021-26, aims to study the
atmosphere, ocean, weather, and
Earth system sciences.

The objectives include enhancing long-term observations of the


Earth System, developing modelling systems for weather prediction,
exploring polar and high seas regions, and developing technology
for oceanic resource harnessing.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India has
introduced "Mulya Pravah 2.0" as a significant directive to
promote ethical practices in higher education, addressing
challenges such as favouritism, sexual harassment, and
gender discrimination.
Chhattisgarh has introduced Mahtari Vandana
Yojana 2024, aiming to offer monthly economic
assistance of ₹1000 to women, totaling an annual
aid of ₹12,000, thereby empowering through
financial support.

GOVERNMENT SCHEMES
THE CONTEXT: Prime Minister recently
launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya
Yojana’, a pivotal government initiative
aimed at installing rooftop solar power
systems in one crore households.

This initiative comes in the backdrop of the existing Rooftop Solar


Programme.
It was launched in 2014 with the ambitious goal of achieving 40 GW
of cumulative installed capacity by 2022. It was later extended to 2026.
The primary objective of this scheme is to install solar power systems
on residential rooftops, benefiting approximately one crore
households.
This initiative not only aims to reduce electricity bills for the poor
and middle class but also aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving
self-reliance in the energy sector.

Jammu and Kashmir has taken a significant step towards


empowering its vibrant community of artisans and
craftspeople by becoming the first Union Territory (UT)
to implement the PM Vishwakarma Yojana.

In a significant move towards promoting


multilingualism in education, the central
government has introduced the ‘Anuvadini’
app, an Artificial Intelligence-based platform.
The initiative aims to make study materials
for all school and higher education courses
available in digital form, specifically in Indian
languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the
Indian Constitution.
