Australian batter David Warner announces retirement from One Day International cricket
 Australian batter David Warner has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs).
 The 2-time ODI World Cup Winner had previously announced that he would be ending his Test
career after Australia's upcoming Test against Pakistan in Sydney.
 However, the opener has said that he will keep himself available for selection in the Champions
Trophy in 2025.
 Warner is Australia's sixth-highest run scorer in the ODI format and is only second to former
captain Ricky Ponting's tally for most Centuries for Australia in ODIs.

 In Men's Chess, Dommaraju Gukesh has secured his spot at the prestigious Candidates
tournament, which will take place in Toronto from April 2 to 25, 2024.
 Gukesh became the third Indian to make the Candidates tournament, joining R Praggnanandhaa
and Vidit Gujrathi.
 This is the first time in history that three Indians are playing the Candidates.
 The winner gets the chance to take on China’s Ding Liren in the next World Chess Championship.
 In Women's Candidates, Koneru Humpy and Rameshbabu Vaishali will represent the country.

Diu
 Beach Games was inaugurated by Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur at Ghoghla Beach
in the Diu.
 The beach games, which started on January 4, will be played till January 11.
 Due to this festival, beach games will also be promoted in other beach states and union territories
of the country.
 Organizing this festival will establish new dimensions and will also promote culture and tourism in
the Union Territory.
 More than twelve hundred players are participating in these competitions from States and Union
Territories.

 Tata Steel Chess tournament 2024 will begin at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.

 Some of the strongest players in the world are gathering in the tournament also called the
"Wimbledon of Chess".

 He defeated China’s Zou Wanhao via technical superiority in the 57kg final, to win India’s first
medal in this edition of the Ranking Series.
 Meanwhile, another Indian wrestler Yash Tushir was defeated by USA’s Quincy by 15-4 in the
round of 16 of the men’s 74kg category.
 Nonetheless, the competition will feature Freestyle wrestlers Vicky and Sumit competing in the
men's 97kg and 125kg weight classes, respectively.
India on top of medals table in Asian Shooting Championship in Jakarta with 07 Gold, 06 Silver, and 06
Bronze medals
 Media_SAIIn Women's shooting, Rhythm Sangwan bagged the Bronze medal in the 25-meter
Pistol event at the Asian Shooting Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.
 With this medal, Rhythm confirmed the 16th Paris Olympic quota for the Indian shooting contingent.
 Also, this is the sixth Paris quota in the pistol events for India and the second in women's 25m
Pistol.
 Rhythm ended the tournament with an impressive performance collecting a total of five medals, 1
gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Indian Shooter Yogesh Singh Wins Gold in Men’s 25m Centre Fire Pistol at Asia Olympic Qualifiers
● Indian shooters continued with winning gold in the Asia Olympic Qualifiers with Yogesh
Singh winning the top prize in individual as well as team event of the men’s 25m centre fire
pistol competition in Jakarta, Indonesia.
● Yogesh claimed the individual gold medal after shooting 573, finishing ahead of silver winner
Muad Al Balushi of Oman (570) and Indonesia’s Anang Yulianto (567).
● The other two Indian participants in the event, Pankaj Yadav (567) and Akshay Jain (564),
ended fourth and sixth.
● The Indian trio aggregated 1704 to bag the team gold ahead of shooters from Oman and
Indonesia.
● In the women's event, the Indian trio of Shreyasi, Manisha Keer and Bhavya Tripathi, however,
won the silver medal in the women’s trap team event with a total of 328, finishing behind China
and ahead of Kazakhstan.

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa surpasses Viswanathan Anand to become India’s number-one Chess
player
● India Chess Wizard Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa defeated World Chess Champion Ding
Liren in the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee, in the Netherlands.
● As a result of this victory, Praggnanandhaa became only the second Indian after
Vishwanathan Anand to defeat a reigning champion.
● He also overtook Anand to become India’s new number one Chess player in terms of live
ratings.

● Tamilnadu won gold in rhythmic yoga followed by West Bengal and Maharashtra.

Raiza Dhillon wins silver in the women’s skeet final at the Asia Olympic Qualification shotgun
tournament.
● Indian Shooter Raiza Dhillon has won silver in the women’s skeet final at the ongoing Asia
Olympic Qualification shotgun tournament in Kuwait.
● With this win, Raiza secured Paris 2024 Olympic quota in shooting.
● While Maheshwari Chauhan got Bronze and Ganemat Sekhon finished at 4th.
● The trio also won the team gold medal for India.

 In the Kho Kho semi-finals girls, Odisha beat Delhi 27 -18 and Maharashtra beat Gujarat 27 -16.
 In Boys Kho Kho, Maharashtra beat Karnataka 29 -23 and Delhi beat Gujarat 43-28.
 In Shooting, - Skeet boys all the medal winners were from Punjab. Gurfateh Singh Sandhu, Zorawar
Singh Bedi, and Harazeez Singh Alwa from Punjab won the gold, silver, and bronze medals
respectively.
 In Shooting Skeet Girls, Devyani Rathore and Yashaswi Rathore both from Rajasthan won gold and
silver medals respectively. Venkat Lakshmi Lekhu from Tripura won the bronze medal.
ICC lifts suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket after two-months

 The International Cricket Council (ICC) has lifted the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket with immediate
effect.
 Sri Lanka Cricket has been reinstated as a member of the International Cricket Council after a two-
month suspension.
 Sri Lanka Cricket was suspended for violation of responsibilities as an ICC Member, in particular, the
requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference
in the governance, regulation, and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
Divyansh Singh Panwar from India clinches gold medal in men's air rifle event at the ISSF World Cup
held in Cairo
 In air rifle shooting, Indian Olympian Divyasnsh Singh Panwar had struck gold in the men's event
with a world record score in the final while Sonam Uttam Maskar, competing in her first International
Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup, bagged silver in the women's 10-metre event in Cairo.
 The 21-year-old shot 253.7 bettering Chinese Sheng Lihao's 253.3, set at the Asian Games in
Hangzhou last year.
 India is now firmly on the top of the table in the season-opening World Cup stage with two gold and
three silver medals in their kitty after three days of competition.
 This was Divyansh's fifth overall World Cup stage gold and second individual gold after his last effort
came in Putian in 2019.
Rohan Bopanna has become the World No. 1 Doubles Player after his Australian Open Victory
 Indian Tennis star Rohan Bopanna for the first time climbed to World Number One position in the
latest ATP Doubles Rankings released.
 Rohan Bopanna won his career’s first Men’s Doubles Grand Slam at the Australian Open to jump
two places in the ATP Rankings.
 Bopanna’s Australian partner Matthew Ebden is the new World Number Two.
 43-year old Bopanna is the oldest World Number One in Men’s Tennis.
 He is also the fourth Indian tennis player after Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza to
reach the top of the tennis rankings.
 All four are also the only Indian Grand Slam winners.

 India's tennis star Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden clinched the grand
slam title at the Australian Open 2024 after the duo defeated Italy's Simone Bolelli, and Andrea
Vavassori in the men's doubles final at Melbourne Park.
 The 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna, who recently became World No. 1 in the ATP men's doubles
rankings is now the oldest grand slam winner.
 The victory in the Australian Open marks the initial significant triumph for the duo, who
experienced defeat in the US Open final last year.
 Following the rankings update, Rohan Bopanna will ascend to the world number one spot, while
Matthew Ebden, despite participating in three additional tournaments within the ranking period,
will hold the number two position.

Aryna Sabalenka crushes Zheng Qinwen to defend Australian Open title
 Aryna Sabalenka crushes Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2 to defend Australian Open title.
 She became the first woman to do so in more than a decade.
 The 25-year-old Belarusian defending champion and world number two Aryna Sabalenka
defeated Chinese 12th seed Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2 to win the Australian Open women's singles
title in Melbourne.
 Sabalenka took just 33 minutes to race through a 6-3 win in the first set at Melbourne Park.
 This is Sabalenka's second Grand Slam title while Zheng was gunning for a first.
 Sabalenka became the first woman to defend the Australian Open title since 2013.
Virat Kohli wins ICC ODI Player of the Year award for 4th time
 Indian batting star Virat Kohli bagged the ICC ODI Player of the Year award for the fourth time,
following his record-breaking performance in the World Cup 2023.
 Kohli had previously won the award in 2012, 2017, and 2018 and also stands amongst the four
nominees for the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2023 award.
 Notably, Kohli has become the first-ever cricketer to clinch this award four times, surpassing AB de
Villiers' tally of three awards.
 Virat Kohli built on his comeback in 2022 with a spectacular 2023, where he won the Player of the
Tournament performance at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
Nikita Kumari of Rajasthan wins the Khelo India Youth Games gold in discus throw.
 In the Khelo India youth games, Nikita Kumari of Rajasthan won the gold in the discus throw event.
 She was followed by Riddhi from Haryana winning the silver while Bhakti Gawade from Maharashtra
won the bronze.
 In the triple jump match Paveena Rajesh from Tamil Nadu won the gold followed by Pamela Var
shini.G. from Tamil Nadu winning silver and P.V.Abirami from Kerala taking the bronze medal.
 In the volleyball girls' event, West Bengal defeated Kerala 3-0.
 In the hammer throw boys' event,Omkar Prasad Nand from Odisha took the first place followed by
Yashar Kurbar by Karnataka and the third place was taken by Nikhil Yadav, Haryana.
 In the 800m girls athletics, M.An Silin and Aksilin from Tamil Nadu won the gold and silver medals
while Priyanka Olkar from Karnataka won the bronze.
 In Mallakhamb events, on the whole Maharashtra won the gold medal with 209.25 points followed by
Tamilnadu at a score of 207.35 points and Madhya Pradesh stood third with 205.30 points.

Maharashtra gymnast Aaryan Davande has won the gold medal in boys' artistic all-round category at
Khelo India Youth Games held in Chennai.
 In the Khelo India Youth Games 2023, defending champions Maharashtra opened their gold medal
account when gymnast Aaryan Davande clinched the Boys Artistic All-Round crown at the SDAT
Aquatics complex in Chennai.
 Davande accumulated a total of 73 points to beat Uttar Pradesh’s Pranav Mishra. Harshit of UP
clinched the bronze in the event.

Maharashtra bagged the silver and Gumoor Poonia from Haryana got the bronze medal.
 Kerala won the gold, Maharashtra bagged silver and Tamilnadu got the bronze medal in the team
sprint cycling event.
BCCI announces that Virat Kohli will miss the first two Tests against England due to personal reasons.
 The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that Indian batting maestro Virat
Kohli has opted to withdraw from the first two Tests against England, citing personal reasons
 BCCI assured that Kohli's replacement will be announced shortly.
 India is set to play a five-match Test series, the first of which will be held in Hyderabad on January
25.
 The second match of the series will be played on February 2 in Visakhapatnam.
 The series will conclude with the fifth and final test to be held in Dharamshala on March 11.

 India’s Man Singh claimed the gold medal at the Asian Marathon Championships 2024 with a
personal best timing of two hours 14 minutes and 19 seconds in Hong Kong.
 The 34-year-old Indian marathon runner comfortably beat runner-up Huang Yongzheng of China with
a time difference of 65 seconds in the men’s event.
 Kyrgyzstan’s Tiapkin Ilya came third in 2:18:18.
 Man Singh’s previous personal best was 2:16:58, clocked at Mumbai Marathon 2023.
 Man Singh was part of the Indian contingent at the Asian Games 2023 and finished eighth with a
timing of 2:16:59 in the marathon event.
 In the women’s event, India’s Ashvini Jadhav finished eighth in 2:56:42 and Jyoti Gawate finished
11th in 3:06:20.

 In the rhythmic gymnastics individual event of the Khelo India Youth games, Sanyukta Kale from
Maharashtra won the gold, Muskan Rana from Jammu and Kashmir won the silver and Life Adlakha
won the bronze medals.
 Raja Babu Yadav, Gymnastics coach from Uttar Pradesh told Akashwani that Indian gymnastics
players are ready to compete in international games.
 Pranav Mishra who won the silver medal said that it was a momentous occasion for him.
 In the women artistic individual gymnastics, Nishika Agarwal from Telangana won the gold, Soumili
Karar from West Bengal won the silver and Sara Rawool won the bronze medals.
