THE SIMPLE PRESENT :


We use the simple present form for many reasons :
 General truths
Example : Water boils at 100c
 To express emotions, feelings, desires
Example : I love yassa
 Repeated actions
Example : I drive my car to the office
 Habits and facts
Example : I write with my left hand

 Unchanging facts
Example : The earth revolves around the sun
 To give directions /instructions
Example : Turn left after the shop, then you go straight
Take the chalk and correct the exercise
With some time markers:
 Now
 Today
 Every (day, mont, year…)
 Sometimes
 Never
 Always

FORMATION :
TO BE
I AM
YOU/WE/YOU/THEY ARE
HE/SHE/IT IS

TO HAVE
I/ YOU/WE/YOU/THEY HAVE
HE/SHE/IT HAS

A part from to be/to have and modals, you take the VERB (without to) and you add ‘‘s’’ for
the 3rd person.
NB : The 3rd person makes the difference
For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.
Go – goes
Catch – catches
Wash – washes
Kiss – kisses
Fix – fixes
Buzz – buzzes

Fo verbs that end with Y, we simply add ‘‘S’’


Play = playS
Lay= LayS

NEGATIVE FORM
We use Don't or Doesn't / am not/ isn’t or aren’t with all verbs EXCEPT To Be and Modal
verbs (can, might, should etc.).
TO BE
I AM NOT
HE/SHE/IT ISN’T (IS NOT)
YOU/WE/YOU/THEY AREN’T (ARE NOT)

INTERROGATIVE :
IS/DO/DOES +SUBJECT+VERB (WITHOUT TO)
Examples :
Is the child at school ?
Do you eat mafé ?
Does she learn her lessons ?

INTERRO-NEGATIVE FORM :

IS/DO/DOES +SUBJECT+NOT+VERB (WITHOUT TO)


Examples :
Do you not eat mafé ? Contracted form : Don’t you eat mafé ?
Is the child not at school ? Contracted form : Isn’t the child at school
Does she not learn her lessons ? Contracted form : Doesn’t she learn her lessons ?
