DEFINITION:
-We use the present continuous
when often the action is
happening at the time of
speaking.

-To talk about actions happening


at or around the moment of
speaking (temporary actions)
Form:
We form the Present Continuous
with:
be + verb (base form)+ ing
Am → I
Is → He / She / It
Are → You / We / They
Examples:
I´m working at
the moment.
You/We/They´re
looking for a job.
He/She/It´s
waiting for you.
• Negative Form:

be + not + verb (base form)+ ing

Examples:
I am not dancing.
You are not dancing.
He / She / It is not dancing.
We are not dancing.
you are not dancing.
They are not dancing.
Spelling Rules:
•Some verbs ending in –e drop the –
e and take the –ing suffix
Ex: write→ writing
•Verbs ending in –l, double the –l
and take the –ing suffix
•Ex: travel→ travelling
Continue Spelling Rules
sit  sitting /swim  swimming
,but open  opening
• Verbs ending in –ie, drop the –ie
and take –y + ing
• Ex: lie lying
die  dying
Stative verbs:
We use continuous tenses only for actions and
happenings. Some verbs are not action verbs, but they
describe states
(physical/mental condition of sb.)

The following verbs are not normally used in continuous


tenses, but in simple tenses:
Like, love, hate, want, need, prefer,
know,realise,suppose, mean, understand,
believe, remember, belong, contain, consist,
depend, seem
Examples:

I´m hungry. I want something to eat. (not I´m wanting)


Do you understand what I mean?
Ann doesn´t seem very happy at the moment.
