We co- create meaning in communication

Communication will not be called communication if it consists of only one person. To

communicate is to convey message to another person. To form a communication, there will be a
sender and the receiver of the message. We can communicate with our self, but in reality,
communication happens between two or more person.
For me, since there is an exchange of thoughts, you co-create meaning with the person you are
talking with. It means that both of you should understand each other. Both of you should have a
common understanding of the message you are trying to deliver. If you understand each other,
you can fully grasp the message you are trying to convey. With that, you can provide the correct
feedback or response to each other. Both of you will be aware of the meaning of the message,
and together, you will be able to acknowledge each other’s point. Co-creating meaning could
also be shown if you are aware of each other’s emotion, behavior, or the non-verbal cues while
communicating. To know each other’s emotion or feeling while talking could help you respond
accurately, or think of the right words to say. You should be able to interpret the message based
on your own beliefs or experiences. When we say non-verbal cues, it means that you should be
also aware of their tone of voice, their facial expressions, ad even their body language. If you
are taking considerations of those things, both of you will have effective communication. You
are co-creating meaning when both of you are exchanging ideas and be able to provide your
own meaning or provide additional information.
Also, active listening is important when communicating. Not listening attentively to the person
you are speaking with might lead to miscommunication. If you are paying attention to the
speaker, you can understand the message they are trying to convey, and also get the
underlying message. But miscommunication might also happen if you have different opinions or
it could be differences in attitude or cultural beliefs. Even so, if both of you are able to recognize
and address those barriers, you will be able to co-create meaning.
