Sandy Cove Beach, Saturday 20 June,

9.30 a.m.–12.30 p.m.
If you haven’t got plans for the weekend, why not
come to the beach, pick up a bag and a litter picker
and help us with the beach clean-up?
There will be separate groups including one that will
be plogging, which is a craze that started in Sweden
in 2016 and involves picking up litter while jogging.
If you join that group, you can get fit while helping
the environment.
All bags of litter will be emptied and sorted so
we can categorise all waste. The group leader,
Francis, is doing research into beach litter in order
to identify any commercial polluters. She believes
that the most efficient way to prevent pollution
is to find out whether it has a common source.
Companies are likely to change their practices if
they’re identified. Francis will photograph the litter
you collect and post the data online, which means
you’ll be able to see just how much litter the group
saves from entering the sea.
Bring a picnic lunch, but no single-use plastics
please, and it goes without saying that we’ll leave no
trace that we were there when we leave the beach.
Family groups are welcome, but dogs and other
animals are not allowed (apart from guide dogs).

Are beach clean-ups
worthwhile?
In recent years, picking up rubbish from beaches
has become a popular group activity. But how
effective is it at preventing pollution from entering
the sea and other natural environments?
Research shows that beach clean-ups are only
dealing with the tip of the iceberg as just a small
proportion of rubbish ends up on beaches. The
vast majority stays in the sea with much of it
sinking to its bottom. In addition, people often
miss small pieces of litter, such as cigarette
butts and bottle tops. However, being involved in
cleaning natural spaces is at least an attempt to
protect the environment and prevent wildlife from
being caught in litter. If left in the environment,
plastic items are broken down by the tide into
much smaller pieces, known as microplastics.
These are then likely to be consumed by marine
animals, thus entering the food chain. Cleaning
the environment also gives people a sense that
they are at least doing something to combat
pollution, even though a lot more needs to
be done.

Cześć Antek,
w najbliższy weekend mam zamiar wziąć udział w grupowym spacerze wzdłuż plaży,
zorganizowanym po to, aby pozbierać tam śmieci. Myślę, że nasze środowisko potrzebuje
tyle pomocy, ile tylko możliwe, a jeśli tylko możemy uchronić choć jedno zwierzę przed

w śmieciach, to jest to warte zachodu.
Tak się składa, że są przeprowadzane badania dotyczące rodzajów zebranych śmieci
i będziemy mogli zobaczyć ich wyniki 5 , jak już wszystko zostanie policzone.
W klasie robiliśmy badania dotyczące najpopularniejszych rodzajów śmieci zebranych
z plaży, ale 6 procent śmieci nie kwalifikowało się do żadnej z dziesięciu
najpopularniejszych kategorii. Będąc ostatnio kilkakrotnie na plaży, myślałem, że
plastikowe butelki to najpopularniejsza rzecz znajdowana w morzu, ale w rzeczywistości ich

były częstsze, a pierwszą pozycję na liście zajęły papierosy. Myślę, że wiele
osób nie zdaje sobie sprawy z tego, że one też zawierają plastik i po prostu je wyrzuca.
