Visual Sense: Mixed Impressions

Knobless Cylinders
Materials 4 boxes containing 4 sets of 10 cylinders, which correspond to those
in the cylinder blocks each set is a special color: red (corresponding
to Block A), yellow (Block B), green (Block C) and blue (Block D).

Purposes  To observe/compare relationships between/among different series.


 To attain clearer impressions about dimensions and their interplay

Age 4.5 and up

Knobless Cylinders

Presentation 1. Invite the child


2. Walk to the shelf and name the activity
3. Tell child there are two boxes of cylinders to take to table and s/he
chooses one to carry and you the other (the yellow and the green)
4. Place boxes to the top right corner of the table
5. Open yellow box and take out all yellow cylinders one by one
carefully setting them down to the chaos side
6. Say “I am going to arrange the cylinders in some kind of order"
7. Start building from the thickest to the thinnest from left to right
forming a horizontal line in front of the child using a pencil grip
8. Set first 3 cylinders, then invite child to finish building.
9. Once child is done, invite them to stand, walk around & admire
result from all angles, making comments like " It disappeared", " this
is so interesting" etc.
10. Sit down and get green box, setting those cylinders in chaos
11. Arrange first 3 from thickest/shortest to thinnest/tallest and left to
right in front of yellow cylinders
12. Admire result from all possible angles, including birds-eye view
13. “Now I will show you something new you can do with cylinders.”
14. Superimpose first 3 green cylinders on top of yellow cylinders and
then invite child to complete superimposing the rest
15. Then get up, both you and child admire view from different angles
16. Model another comparison e.g. superimpose green cylinders on
yellow cylinders of same diameter. Place 3 cylinders and invite child
to complete. Invite the child to walk around to admire.
17. Model another comparison e.g. superpose inverse relationship.
Invite child to continue. Invite child to admire.
18. Then guide the child set all the cylinders back in chaos
19. Invite child to explore other ways to work with these 2 cylinders
20. Fade and observe
21. Return to encourage child to switch to a new box
22. Ask child to place materials back on shelf after working with them

Notes  The yellow and green box are good to start with as they vary in 3
dimensions.
 This is one of the last sensorial materials presented.
