Week three Glossary

sequential
reading skills o the ability to arrange events into
a “beginning, middle, and end”
when it comes to comprehending
a text. Readers who can do this
have stronger comprehension of a
text than readers who cannot.
Phonics
o the understanding that there is a
predictable relationship between
phonemes (the sounds of spoken
language) and graphemes (the
letters that represent them in
written language
o For example, when a child is
taught the sounds for the letters t,
p, a and s, they can start to build
up the words: “tap”, “taps”,
“pat”, “pats” and “sat”
Synthetic
phonics o a method for teaching children
how to read and write in English.
Through this form of phonics
teaching, they'll learn how all
words in English are reducible to
units of sounds called
'phonemes', which we write down
using letters or small groups of
letters called 'graphemes
o To listen for sounds in words to
spell. All the different ways each
sound can be represented, e.g. the
sound /a/ as in 'apron' can be
spelled: 'ay' like in 'pay, 'ai' like
in 'paid', 'a' like in 'apron', 'eigh'
like in 'eight' and so on.
Analytic
phonics o a very common approach to the
teaching of reading that starts at
the word level, not at the sound
(phoneme) level. It does not
teach the blending of sounds
together as is done in synthetic
phonics.
graphonic
o Relating to the relationship
between how words or characters
look and how they sound.
Syntactic
o relating to the grammatical
arrangement of words in a
sentence: syntactic analysis.
semantic
o Semantics is the study of
meaning in language. It can be
applied to entire texts or to single
words. For example,
"destination" and "last stop"
technically mean the same thing,
but students of semantics analyze
their subtle shades of meaning.
Pragmatic
o Pragmatics is the branch of
linguistics that studies implied
and inferred meanings. This is
also known as conversational
implicature. Pragmatics follows
certain rules that natural speakers
can follow without much thought
at all. The most important aspect
of pragmatics is the context.
