Picture Analysis: Is This You?

A. A question about discomfort, “have you ever felt stiff or achy working at your
computer for a period of time?
 Ask the students to share their experiences of discomfort during the pandemic
setup of blended learning

Most of us, from time to time, have experienced some level of discomfort from
working for long periods at a computer workstation.

Workstation ergonomics can give you the tools you need to work more comfortably
on your computer.

So without further a do, let’s proceed with our lesson.

LEARNING
COMPETENCY FIRM-UP
LC1 Defines Activity 1 (Definition of Ergonomics)
ergonomics Instructions: (specific for students to follow even without the teacher)

So what is Ergonomics?
Learning Targets:
I can define Ergonomics can be defined as the scientific study of the fit between people
ergonomics and their work.
I can value the
benefits of Ergonomics focuses on ensuring that tasks, equipment, information, and the
workstation environment suit each worker. Workstation ergonomics, specifically, is focused on the
ergonomics fit between the worker and his or her computer workstation.

Benefits of Ergonomics
Not only can ergonomics make you more comfortable at work, but it can also help
to prevent musculoskeletal disorders.

By proactively looking at the way you work, you can help to prevent illnesses and
reduce risks in the workplace. You can also improve productivity and performance
at work.

PEAC2020 Page 2
Sample Scenario:
Ryan is an office worker who
spends most of his working
day at his workstation
working on the computer and
answering telephone calls. He
frequently gets headaches,
back pain, and stiffness in his
shoulder.

He had to take two days off work last month because of the pain in his back. He
has been visiting a chiropractor for treatment. At his last visit to his chiropractor,
Ryan spoke to him about his worsening back pain. His chiropractor asked him some
questions about his work and the equipment he uses.

Following this discussion, Ryan learned that he could improve his posture at work,
adjust his chair, and do some simple exercises. After making these changes, his
symptoms greatly improved.

By making some simple changes to his working habits using sound ergonomic
principles, Ryan was able to improve his health and his working life.

Understanding ergonomics and how it applies to your work setting can help you to be
more comfortable at work and avoid illness and muscle disorders.

LC2 Identify key Activity 3 (Discussion on Factors Affecting Workstation Ergonomic)

PEAC2020 Page 3
factors that can affect Instructions: (specific for students to follow even without the teacher)
workstation
ergonomics Ergonomics is concerned with the fit between people and their work. There is more
than one single factor that creates a good fit between a person and his or her work.
Instead, there are lots of elements that influence that fit. In this topic, you will learn
Learning Targets: to identify the key factors that affect workstation ergonomics.
I can understand
workstation ergonomic To assess the fit between a person and his or her work, ergonomists consider many
factors that affects factors. These include physical factors, environmental factors, workstation design,
performance and personal factors.

I can identify 1. Physical Factors

ergonomic factors that There are many physical factors that can affect how you work. For example, if you
cause difficulties in have to stretch every time you use the mouse, this could strain your shoulder and
the workstation arm muscles. When ergonomists study a workstation, they consider physical factors,
such as, posture, position of your limbs, and support for your back.

2. Environmental Factors
The environment you work in can affect the ergonomics of your workstation. The
office lighting is one environmental factor that can contribute to your comfort or
discomfort. For example, if your computer monitor is in direct sunlight, this can
create a glare on the screen. This glare can cause discomfort in the short-term, and
even lead to eyesight problems in the long-term.
Other factors in your working environment can impact on how comfortable and
productive you are. Temperature, noise, vibration, and ventilation are among the
environmental factors that ergonomists study. Even a seemingly minor irritation, such
as a wobble from an unstable keyboard tray, can cause vibrations and create an
uncomfortable workstation.

3. Workstation Design
One of the key elements to consider when creating an ergonomic office is workstation
design. How your workstation is designed can have an enormous impact on how you
use it. Important factors to consider include the position and size of your work
surface, the location and height of your computer monitor, and the position of your
keyboard and mouse.

4. Personal
Ergonomics is concerned with the fit between the person and the job. Therefore, it is
important to assess the worker, as well as the working environment, when
considering workstation ergonomics. Ergonomics considers the physical and
psychological abilities of a worker to ensure that they are appropriate to the job that
person does.
A worker's size and shape, their vision, and their physical fitness, all play a role in
creating an ergonomic workstation. It’s important that each workstation is assessed
to ensure that it meets the individual needs of the person using it.
As well as physical abilities, ergonomists consider psychological factors when
examining how well a person fits their job. The mental abilities of the worker, their
levels of stress, and their interaction with others are all important elements of
ergonomics.

Conclusion:
Ergonomics is influenced by many different factors. To create a truly ergonomic
workstation, you need to consider these factors:
 Physical
 Environmental
 Personal
 Workstation design

Activity 4 (Workstation Scenario)
Instructions: (Identify the factors that affect the character in the situation in the
matching-type test that follows.)

Scenario: Anna is a receptionist in a busy doctor’s office with three doctors. She has
not been trained in using the records system the doctors use. She is the only person
on reception and has to answer the phone, make appointments, and update the
records.
Her desk is positioned beside a window and there is direct sunlight on her computer
screen. In addition, she is suffering from back pain because her seat doesn’t provide
sufficient support. Anna is affected by personal, physical, and environmental factors
in her work. An ergonomist would consider all of these factors when designing a
suitable workstation for Anna.
