Training: Cargo Incident / shifting

Participants: All crew except duty Officer on bridge.

Time: 1715-1730

Description of Training:

All Crew were briefed regarding the following actions:


1. If the vessel is rolling heavily, then alter course to minimize rolling effects.
2. Prepare engines for stand-by: in case necessary to reduce speed to minimum to
maintain steerage way.
3. Appropriate signals ready if any future manoeuvring would be restricted. (nuc signal
may be displayed).
4. Survival craft to be prepared by the back up team.
5. If safe to do so, chief officer to investigate cargo shift and report to master:
a.What has shifted
b.Reasons, if known, for shift.
c.Damage sustained (if any).
d.Likelihood of further shifting and/or damage.
6. Consider whether it is safe to secure shifted cargo, without undue risk to crew.
7. If applicable consider using container web lashings.
8. For deck cargo - consideration may have to be given to jettisoning if safety of life or
the safety of the ship is threatened (imminent danger). Notification of any jettisoning
along with position report must be given to relevant shore authorities, managers and
charterers.
9. Consideration may be given to diverting to a nearer port to discharge / restow cargo for
reasons of safety.
10. Company management office & charterers to be informed and updated.
11. Commence and maintain log of events.
