A MAJOR SHIFT IN THE PATTERN OF PRELIMS AND NATURE OF QUESTIONS:
» Since the 69th Prelims (2023), negative marking of 0.33% (1/3th) has been introduced.
» Apart from that a major shift has been notice in nature of questions in the 69th Prelims examination.
» Before 2023, most of the questions asked were of factual nature and one liner. For example:

Ques: ‘Shrillness of sound’ is determined by? [68th B.P.S.C]

Ques: Who was the first governor of Bihar? [68th B.P.S.C]
Ques: Who was the founder of All India Harijan Sangh in 1932? [68th B.P.S.C]
Ques: The most important ore of Aluminium is? [67th B.P.S.C]
Ques: What is the length of Atal Tunnel? [67th B.P.S.C]
…..and so on.

POLITY Plan
However since 2023, a major shift has been introduced in which while retaining the
old format of one-liner question, the commission has introduced questions with
multiple statements (mostly 3 or 4 statements). For example:

Q. Consider the following statements Q. Consider the following statements:

regarding the Vikramshila University in
Bihar: 1. Lake Victoria is the third largest fresh water lake
in the world by surface area.
1. It was located in the present-day Banka 2. It is one of the great lakes of Africa.

2. It was established by King Gopala I of the Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya.

Which of the above statements are incorrect? (C) 3 and 4 (D) 1 and 3
(A) 2 and 3 (B) 1 and 4
(C) 1 and 2 (D) None of the Above [69th B.P.S.C Prelims]
[69th B.P.S.C Prelims]

» Therefore it is evident that B.P.S.C is gradually moving closer to U.P.S.C and adapting the nature of
questions asked in Civil services Prelims examination.
» In such a scenario it becomes a priority for the B.P.S.C aspirants to understand the new pattern and
the most appropriate approach to crack such questions.

CHANGES INTRODUCED IN PRELIMS IN 69TH PRELIMS (2023):

» There were a lot of statement wise (new pattern) questions asked in the 69th Prelims.
» The Commission broked its old pattern of asking fixed number of questions from certain sections like
30 questions from History, 30 from Science, 30 from Bihar sections and 30 from current Affairs.
» The weightage of General science and Bihar section were reduced to around 20 questions.
» Before 2023 prelims the polity, economy and Geography sections were either ignored or very few
questions were asked from them.
» However surprisingly there were around 14 questions from Economy and Polity each. This marks a
major shift in the overall structure of the exam.
» Another surprising factor was the absence of state (Bihar) specific current affairs questions.
» Only a single question was asked from Bihar Current Affairs while earlier there used to be 5-10
questions from this section.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE IDEAL APPROACH IN THE CHANGING SCENARIO?

» Majority of the question asked in the B.P.S.C are straight forward i.e. directly derived from a basic
principle of science/ a historical event/ a geographical phenomenon or an economic concept.
» Therefore a general but precise preparation through the basic study material fulfils the requirement
of the exam.
» There are certain sections in which the work to output ratio is high and aspirants can score high by
precisely preparing such sections.

www.perfectionias.com
Detailed Preparatory
POLITY Plan
» For example the Modern India part of history, geography and history of Bihar, Basics of Indian
constitution, physics and Biology in science are most rewarding sections in this exam. These sections
together constitute around 50 percent of the question paper.
» The 10 questions asked from the quant and aptitude sections are a must go for and is generally
considered a bonus. Therefore the section should not be ignored.

IMPORTANCE OF CURRENT AFFAIRS IN B.P.S.C PRELIMS

» Current Affairs constitute around 20 percent of the B.P.S.C Prelims examination. Around 30+ questions
have been consistently asked in the previous years.
» Therefore current affairs is the area that is not to be ignored. Besides Current affairs questions are
mostly easy to moderate that makes it one of the scoring area.
» The important areas of current affairs that have appeared in the recent exams are:
• Recent developments in the IT, Space, Robotics and Bio-tech sector. For example ChatGPT, Tesla
Robot, etc.
• Terms/accords repeatedly in news like NET Metering, Lisbon declaration, etc.
• Economic groupings/arrangements and pacts like ECTA, G20, Russia’s Wagner Mercenary Group,
etc.
• Recent legislations or policy measures announced by central government like Mother Tongue
Survey, Plain language Act, National Education Policy etc.
• 2-3 questions from sports are also repeatedly asked.
• Questions pertaining to conservation of species like state level committee for conservation of
Vultures, etc.
• Global reports like Gender Gap Report etc.

IMPORTANCE OF PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTIONS (PYQS) IN B.P.S.C

Given by PERFECTION IAS?

» The syllabus has been sub-categorized into sub-topics to highlight the importance
of various topics in the prelims examination.
» Therefore time allotted to each subject should be in proportion of the weightage of
that subject in the question paper.
» All topics/subjects do not carry equal weightage in the examination. Therefore
strategy to allot time to various subjects should be devised accordingly.
» If we talk of History, the ‘Modern India’ sections is the most fruitful and around 15
questions are asked each year, as is evident from the previous year papers.
» Therefore modern India should be given more effort/time when compared to
Ancient and Medieval India.
» Similarly in the Bihar General Knowledge section, ‘the geography and history of
Bihar’ together constitutes around 15+ question, while the ‘Polity of Bihar’ sees
less questions being asked.
» From the ‘Economy of Bihar’, the questions being asked are mainly from current
developments like Budget, recent state government policy, or recent economic data.
» Similarly the ‘Constitution part in Indian polity’ fetches around 10+ questions.
» In economy the number of questions vary from year to year. However the topics
from ‘Indian economy’ like Planning in India, India’s economic development,
industries and industrial policy, Budget, inflation, human capital and Government
schemes are frequently asked.
» Another important area in economy is the external sector and topics like Forex,
currencies, WTO, IMF, global economic developments etc. important.
» In geography the physical part is more important than the Human geography and
questions from human geography are rarely asked.
» Also very few questions (2-3) are asked from the environment section.
» Therefore more time should be devoted to basic concepts of Physical geography
and details of Indian physical setup like rivers, mountains, soil type, climatic regions,
monsoon etc.
