“THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR”

Early Childhood Education (ECE) is the cornerstone of the foundation of

educational development for all children. It is during this time when children have
the best opportunity for long-term success in learning and developing. Early
childhood education is defined as the education of children from birth to grade
three, or age eight. Long gone are the days when starting your child off with
education at kindergarten was considered a step ahead.

Today, children are already significantly behind in kindergarten if they do

not attend preschool. Tomorrow, as more and more parents, and public figures
understand the importance of more comprehensive education at even younger
ages, your child may begin learning fundamental social, cognitive, and academic
skills in preschool. It is quickly becoming one of the most important steps in the
academic success of children.

The roots of early childhood education go as far back as the early 1500s,

where the concept of educating children was attributed to Martin Luther (1483-

1546). Back then, very few people knew how to read, and many were illiterate.

Martin Luther believed that education should be universal and made it a point to

emphasize that education strengthened the family as well as the community.

Luther believed that children should be educated to read independently so that

they could have access to the Bible. This meant that teaching children how to

read at an early age would be a strong benefit to society.

Building on this idea, the next individual who contributed to the early

beginnings of early childhood education was John Amos Comenius (1592- 1670),

who strongly believed that learning for children is rooted in sensory exploration.

Comenius wrote the first children’s picture book to promote literacy. Then there

was John Locke (1632- 1704), who penned famous term of “blank slate”, also

known as tabula rasa, which postulated that it is how children start out and the

environment fills their metaphorical “slate”.

A major influencer was Friedrich Froebel (1782 – 1852), who believed that

children learn through play. He designed teacher training where he emphasized

the importance of observation and developing programs and activities based on

the child’s skill level and readiness. Froebel formalized the early childhood

setting as well as founded the first kindergarten.

Further building from this concept, Maria Montessori (1870-1952) viewed

the children as a source of knowledge and the educator as a social engineer.

Reviewed education as a means to enhance children’s lives meaning the

learning environment is just as important as learning itself. She took the position

that children’s senses should be educated first and then the children’s intellect.

The Montessori Method is an internationally recognized mode of educating

children.

In general, the pioneer of early childhood education are these

personalities. They are the first and foremost educators in the history of early

childhood education. With the help of these people, finally, until now the early

childhood education exists and improving.

An early childhood educator is a teacher who specializes in educating

children usually under the age of 0-8. They provide children with the fundamental

education they later build on throughout their school careers. These educators

teach their students basic language, mathematics, and developmental skills.

Early childhood educators can work in elementary schools, middle schools, or

specialized educational institutions.

What exactly are the duties and responsibilities of an early childhood

educator? Here are a few of the common duties for early childhood educators: a.)

they plan and implement lessons for their students to stimulate the students'

development. In addition to their intellectual growth, early childhood educators

also work to grow their students' emotional, physical, and cultural development.

The daily duties of early childhood educators are similar to those of teachers of

older students but do feature a few which relate specifically to teaching younger

children. For instance, high school teachers may not focus so much on tasks

designed to stimulate their students' fine motor skills, like designating arts and

crafts assignments. b.) creating and implementing lesson plans. One of the major

duties for early childhood educators is to design lesson plans and lead their

students through them to achieve set educational goals; c.) maintaining a safe

environment. A key responsibility for these educators is to ensure that their

classrooms or learning environments are physically, emotionally, and culturally

safe spaces for their students; d.) supervising and disciplining

students. Discipline is a key part of any schooling, and early childhood educators

discipline their students in age-appropriate ways; e.) communicating with

parents. Educators for younger children often communicate with a student's

parents to inform them of their child's progress, activity at the institution, or

provide program updates; and f.) evaluating students' progress. A key

component of effective education is to assess the student's progress frequently

to better understand if the lessons are working.

How to become an early childhood educator? Here are six simple steps in

becoming an early childhood educator: a.) Gain a high school diploma. The first

step in pursuing a career as an early childhood educator is to graduate high

school and gain a diploma. High school education provides you with the

fundamental knowledge in language, mathematics, and any specialized subjects

required to continue your education at the tertiary level. Holding a high school

diploma is a common requirement for entry into the early childhood education

programs necessary for being hired as a teacher of children under 9 years of

age; b.) Complete a college program. Being hired as an early childhood educator

is to complete a four-year college program in early childhood education. These

programs provide the foundational knowledge of educational practices, ethics,

and techniques; c.) get an educator's license. It's a common requirement for

those pursuing roles as early childhood educators to hold a license issued by

territorial or provincial associations for early childhood educators (ECE). These

licenses verify that the holder understands the legal implications of working with

children and the standards expected of those in early childhood education roles;

d.) prepare resume. Once hold all the necessary qualifications and licenses for

being an early childhood educator, it's time to prepare updated resume. Begin

the resume by listing personal details, including name, city, province, contact

number, and email address. Then, write either a resume summary or an

objective statement; e.) Write a cover letter. Another major component of a job

application is to write a compelling cover letter. Write a cover letter to the hiring

manager or application recipient introducing yourself as a candidate and

providing a context for the resume; f.) Apply for an entry-level position. With the

qualifications gained and resume prepared, apply for entry-level early childhood

educator roles to begin your career. These positions may carry the same title as

early childhood educators but start at a lower salary or begin under a higher level

of supervision.

Aside from completing an education program and obtaining a teaching

license, an early childhood educator also wants to consider the following key

attributes that effective early childhood educators typically possess: a.) Patience,

being patient is a significant benefit when working with young children. Having a

high degree of patience can make it easier to spend more time trying to

communicate concepts or coordinate groups of children. At early developmental

stages of children's education, patience can help with responding to the different

requirements they have and moving at their pace. Having patience is also

beneficial to early childhood educators because it allows them to find new or

creative ways to interact or solve problems in their classrooms; b.)

Communication, early childhood educators require strong communication skills

not just to communicate with their students, but also with their students' parents.

Being adept with communicating clearly, directly, and intuitively is key for early

childhood educators in all of their interactions; c.) Active listening. This is the

ability to engage with people talking to you and actively receive the information

they're imparting; d.) Emotional intelligence. This is the ability to understand

instinctively how people are thinking, feeling, or reacting to a situation; and e.)

Confidence. Confidence is vital in communicating with children, as speaking with

confidence makes it easier to command their respect and attention.

The average salary of an early childhood educator overseas is $50,279

(2,782,917.51 PHP) per year or $19.23 (1,064.37 PHP) per hour. But in the

Philippines, the average early childhood educator gross salary in is ₱319,001 or

an equivalent hourly rate of ₱153. In addition, they earn an average bonus of

₱5,327. Salary estimates based on salary survey data collected directly from

employers and anonymous employees in Philippines. This salary figure may be

higher or lower depending on the teacher's experience, qualifications, or the

institution they teach at. In addition to this salary, the institution they work in may

provide other forms of remuneration, such as bonuses, dental coverage, or

tenure.

So, with all the processes, duties, responsibilities, and challenges that an

early childhood educator has to do. Why choose to be an early childhood

educator? a.) Watch children learn & thrive under your care. Nothing beats

watching a child learn to spell their name for the very first time because you

taught them how. Or seeing a shy youngster start smiling when a parent drops

them off because you've connected with them and they're not afraid anymore.

You're setting them up for success and coaching them through each step. And

they'll love you for it; b.) early childhood development is truly fascinating. It's

incredible how much we develop between the ages of zero (0) and eight (8).

From learning to walk and communicate our thoughts—to solving complex

problems and understanding social relationships; c.) early childhood educators

are in demand. The latest government career outlook report shows strong

demand for ECEs in the Philippines, Canada, Quebec and other countries in the

world. In fact, the role of Early Childhood Educator gets four out of a possible five

stars for growth and demand; d.) stay youthful, keep fit & have fun. Working with

young kids takes energy and enthusiasm. But you get so much in return; e.) be

truly appreciated by parents and families. if you have kids yourself, you'll

completely understand this one. Most parents are extremely grateful for

preschool and daycare teachers they can really trust, who make their kids feel

great about themselves.

Because of early childhood educators, parents are better able to balance

work and family responsibilities. Because of this, parents can work full-time,

increase family income, and in turn, increase their children’s opportunities down

the road. The importance of early childhood educators is undeniable, and it is

only growing. As more research underlines the importance of early childhood

education, the demand for educators is increasing. By the year 2029, the Bureau

of Labor Statistics predicts that over 30,000 jobs will open up for childcare

workers and preschool teachers. This is now the time to get started.
