THE TURTLE AND THE HARE

One morning, the animals gathered in the

woods to look for food.

Hurry up, Turtle! the hare said. You’re very

sluggish, you’re always being left behind.

I may be slow but I’m not sluggish, the turtle

protested. I have strength and endurance, and I
can prove it to you.

How? The hare sneered.

The turtle challenged the hare to a race. We’ll

race from here to the end of this road, the
turtle said.
A race? The hare laughed. That’s easy, Turtle!

The race began.

The hare easily outran the turtle.

That foolish turtle will take the whole day to

reach the end of this road, the hare said to
himself. I might as well take a nap first.
Soon, the turtle came up the road.

Foolish hare, the turtle said as he passed by the

sleeping hare.

It was late in the day when the hare awoke.

The turtle must still be a long way off down the
road, the hare said when he saw no sign of the
turtle.

Atlast, when the hare reached the end of the

road, he saw the turtle celebrating with the
other animals!

The turtle had won the race!
