Week 1 Internship Journal
internship this spring is under DPH’s Health Protection Division as part of the Injury Prevention
Program. Unfortunately, I am unable to start until January 16th due to DPH only offering new
hire orientation on the 1st and 16th of the month. Ahead of my orientation, I have completed
several important documents given to me by HR. I was also able to read my new hire orientation
reference guide, which contains important information about the training courses I must
complete. It also has important information on connecting to DPH’s intranet, setting up my DPH
19th, which will give me access and instructions for Team Georgia Employee Self Service.
I will be an intern as a part of the BOLD (Building Our Largest Dementia) Public Health
Programs to Address Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. My role involves identifying
risk factors and current interventions for dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and related chronic
diseases and injuries. I am excited to use my previous experience of writing and synthesizing
literature reviews from the DICR summer research program and my coursework in my
internship. Of course, I will also be responsible for presenting my findings at meetings and using
This week, I was introduced to the team I will be working with. Elizabeth Head is the
program manager and is also my site supervisor. Chloe Hale is the evaluator and co-program
manager for BOLD. April-Spring Wood, whom I had the pleasure of meeting back in December
when sorting out my internship, is the implementation specialist, and she helps with evaluation
work. I was also introduced to Steve Davidson, who acts as a mentor for the program and is an
evaluation and rural health expert. Once I have access to my DPH email, I will be having short

meetings with the other Injury Prevention Program managers so that I can better understand
some of the other work that my team works on. I am excited to get started next week, and I can’t
wait to see what I can add to this amazing team. I look forward to meeting more people and
learning more about injury prevention topics and how to apply what I’ve learned over the last
