Teaching Series: UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF THANKSGIVING

(Wednesday 13th December): Understanding the Power of Thanksgiving – Part 1

 We owe God thanks, both as individuals and as a Church – Luk. 17:17-19/ 2 Thes. 2:13
Luke 17:17-19
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the

nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this
stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee
whole.
2 Thess 2:13
13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of

the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation
through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

 Until we thank God for our breath, we may not have our bread – Psa. 150:6
Ps 150:6
6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

 Thanksgiving secures access to God’s presence, where we access the path of life
– Psa. 100:4/ Psa. 16:11/ Psa. 103:7
Ps 100:4
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be

thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Ps 16:11
11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy

right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Ps 103:7
7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

 Thanksgiving engenders breakthrough in our various endeavours – Isa. 54:1-3/

Hab. 3:17-19
Isa 54:1-3
Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud,
thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate
than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord. 2 Enlarge the place of thy
tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not,
lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; 3 For thou shalt break forth on
the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make
the desolate cities to be inhabited.
Hab 3:17-19
17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the

labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be
cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: 18 Yet I will rejoice
in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The LORD God is my strength,
and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon
mine high places.
 Thanksgiving is a vital mystery behind supernatural Church growth – Act. 2:47/
Jer. 30:19
Acts 2:47
47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to

the church daily such as should be saved.

Jer 30:19
19 And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make

merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify
them, and they shall not be small.

But what are we thanking God for?

 For all His benefits including forgiveness, healings, deliverances, continuous
supplies and our total wellbeing – Psa. 103:3-5/ Jn.10:10
Ps 103:3-5
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who

redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness
and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy
youth is renewed like the eagle's.
John 10:10
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come

that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

 For His wondrous works that engraces us for triumphant living – Psa. 78:40-72/
2 Cor.2:14
Ps 78:40-72 [ABRIDGED]
40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. 42

They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the
enemy. 43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field
of Zoan: 44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they
could not drink.
VS:65-72
65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that

shouteth by reason of wine. 66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he
put them to a perpetual reproach. 67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of
Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim: 68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the
mount Zion which he loved. 69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like
the earth which he hath established for ever. 70 He chose David also his servant,
and took him from the sheepfolds: 71 From following the ewes great with young
he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. 72 So he fed
them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness
of his hands.
2 Cor 2:14
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and

maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

 For our continuous change of story – Psa. 92:1-2/13/ Hab. 3:17-19
Ps 92:1-2/13
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy
name, O most High: 2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy
faithfulness every night,
13Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of
our God.

(Wednesday 20th December): Engaging the Power of Thanksgiving – Part 2

 Thanksgiving is a spiritual channel for realization of our glorious destiny
– Rom. 8:29-30/ Hab. 3:17-19
Rom 8:29-30
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate (Thanksgiving reminds

Him His plans for us) to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be
the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate,
them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he
justified, them he also glorified. (To be predestined, is to have planned how
things will turnout no matter what happens in between).
A football match play in 1992, and Nigeria won. You cannot be moved while
watching same match today. Why, we already won in life.
Thanksgivers are faith people.
Abraham giving thanks for Isaac.
Israelites giving thanks for victory, enemies kill themselves.

 Thanksgiving facilitates access to revelation – Psa. 100:4/ 1 Tim. 1:12/ 2 Cor. 12:7
Ps 100:4
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be

thankful unto him, and bless his name.

1 Tim 1:12
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted

me faithful, putting me into the ministry;

2 Cor 12:7
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the

revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan
to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. (Solomon was grateful to
be the one given the opportunity to build the temple, so he thankfully
sacrificed. Hence, God gave him revelation where he was able to decide his
choice before God. And many ideas revealed to him as wisdom).

 Thanksgiving empowers our financial seeds for supernatural returns.

(Solomon was automatically granted financial greatness, even when not asked as
long as he grateful sacrifice.)
– Deut. 26:1-4/10/ 2 Cor. 9:6-8
Deut 26:1-4
And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the Lord thy God
giveth thee for an inheritance, and possessest it, and dwellest therein; 2 That
thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of
thy land that the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt
go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose to place his name there. 3
And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I
profess this day unto the Lord thy God, that I am come unto the country which
the Lord sware unto our fathers for to give us. 4 And the priest shall take the
basket out of thine hand, and set it down before the altar of the Lord thy God.
Deut 26:10
10 And now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land, which thou, O Lord,

hast given me. And thou shalt set it before the Lord thy God, and worship before
the Lord thy God:
2 Cor 9:6-8
6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which

soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he

purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God
loveth a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you;
that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good
work:
(Automatically give when you see His hands, as He automatically set the plan
requesting it from the Israelites.)

 Thanksgiving empowers our stewardship to be profitable – Deut. 28: 47-48/

Phi. 1:15-18
Deut 28:47-48
47 Because thou servedst not the LORD thy God with joyfulness, and with

gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore shalt thou serve
thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst,
and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron
upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
Phil 1:15-18
15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good

will: 16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add
affliction to my bonds: 17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the
defence of the gospel. 18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in
pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will
rejoice.

 Thanksgiving preserves, perfects and multiplies our blessings – Mal. 2:1-3/

Jer. 13:15-17/ Luk. 17:17-19
(David, as a man who gave thanks 7 times daily experience preservation of God's blessing.
His lost family taken away gotten back. He must have thanked God before then of how God
will keep them together all life.)
Mal 2:1-3
And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. 2 If ye will not hear, and if
ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I
will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have
cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. 3 Behold, I will corrupt
your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn
feasts; and one shall take you away with it.
Jer 13:15-17
15 Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken. 16 Give glory to

the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble
upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the
shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. 17 But if ye will not hear it, my
soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore,
and run down with tears, because the LORD's flock is carried away captive.
Luke 17:17-19

17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the
nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this
stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee
whole.
( That means God wants us to be grateful )

But what are we thanking God for?

 For His faithfulness in our lives – Psa. 92:1-3/ Psa. 145:8-9
Ps 92:1-3
It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy
name, O most High: 2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy
faithfulness every night, 3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the
psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound. ( He says, use music )
Ps 145:8-9
8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great

mercy. 9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

 For rendering our enemies helpless – Psa. 138:1/7/ 2 Chr. 20:20-24

Ps 138:1/7
I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto
thee.
7Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch
forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall
save me.
2 Chron 20:20-24
20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of

Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah,
and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be
established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 21 And when he had
consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should
praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say,
Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. 22 And when they began to sing
and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon,
Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were
smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the
inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had
made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24
And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked
unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and
none escaped.
(Wednesday 27th December): Engaging the Power of Thanksgiving – Part 3
 Gratitude from the heart is what counts the most with God – Isa. 29:13/ 1 Sam. 16:7
Isa 29:13
13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their

mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far
from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
1 Sam 16:7
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height

of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the
heart.

 Only those who are grateful for the now can access the next – Luk. 17:17-19
Luke 17:17-19
17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the

nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this
stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee
whole.

 A man cannot receive anything except it be given him from above – Jhn 3:27
John 3:27
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him

from heaven.

 There is nothing we have that we have not received – 1 Cor. 4:7/ Psa. 103:1-5
1 Cor 4:7
7For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou
didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou
hadst not received it?
Ps 103:1-5
Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless
the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine
iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who redeemeth thy life from
destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who
satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the
eagle's.

 We must continue to acknowledge God for His goodness and mercy to retain His
blessings – Psa. 136:1-3/ 2 Chr. 20:21-22
Ps 136:1-3
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. 2 O
give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. 3 O give
thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Chron 20:21-22
21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the

LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before
the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. 22 And
when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the
children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah;
and they were smitten.

But what are we thanking God for?

 For blessings anticipated – Jhn. 6:6-11/ Jhn 11:41-44
John 6:6-11
6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip

answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them,
that every one of them may take a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon
Peter's brother, saith unto him, 9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley
loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 10 And Jesus
said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the
men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves;
and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples
to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
John 11:41-44
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And

Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which

stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43 And when he
thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44 And he that
was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was
bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

 For the fresh oil that destroys every arrow of the wicked targeted at us
– Psa. 89:20-22
Ps 89:20-22
20 I
have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him: 21 With
whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. 22 The
enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
