Enrichment of Vocabulary:
Classified Cards
Materials Collections of pictures dealing with:
A. The home environment: furniture, things in the bedroom, bathroom,
kitchen, clothing, appliances, types of homes
B. The social environment: things on the street, things in a park, school,
playground, transportation, professions, types of buildings, on a farm
C. Cultural Areas: illustrations of geographical, geometrical, biological
and scientific terms. (parts of the….) classification of land/water,
classification of living/living, vertebrate/invertebrate, classifications of
vertebrates, genres of art, parts of animals and plants

Purposes  To enlarge vocabulary and help child classify environment


 To build self-confidence
 To establish auditory memory
 Preparation for further studies
 Preparation for Reading Classification

Age 2.5 and up

Presentation 1. Select a set of picture cards and place them face down on the table.
2. Turn over the first card and describe what you see to the child.
Encourage the child to look closely at the picture.
3. Invite the child to find other cards that they think are similar to the
first one. Encourage them to group the cards based on similarities
they observe.
4. Once the child has grouped some cards together, ask them to explain
why they placed those cards in the same group.
5. If the child needs guidance, you may suggest categories or themes for
them to consider.
6. Continue this process until all the cards have been grouped according
to the child's observations and classifications.
7. Encourage the child to review their groups and make adjustments if
they feel it is necessary. This process helps them refine their
classification skills and encourages critical thinking.
8. After the child has finished grouping the cards, you can introduce
pre-made category labels for discussion or validation, if applicable.

Exercises Invite the child to take two different sets of classified cards. Mix them
up and have them sort them by classification.

2) Eliciting a description or definition


As with classified picture books, use a classified card to elicit a
conversation from the child.

Pedagogical Most beginning sets of cards will have between 10-15 cards per set. The
Notes classifications can be broad (such as transportation). Later classifications
will be more specific (land transportation, air transportation, etc.). A still
further extension could be the history of land transportation.

At any one time, you will need 4 or 5 of your generic sets out at once.
After 6 – 8 weeks, when no challenge or interest is left, the card material
should be rotated.

In addition, one set is needed for each of the cultural and scientific areas:
geography, art, history, music, physical science (clouds, weather, rocks,
etc), botany, zoology.
