“Children as Bunches of Wires”

“Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique,
not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding.” – Robert John
Meehan
Learners are unique in their ways. They become more unique when
learners’ strengths and aptness are brought to light. That uniqueness is the thing
that make them stand out. Uniqueness may vary, some students are good in
sports, Mathematics, English, musically inclined, and many more.
It has been four weeks since the day that I became an intern at Holy
Cross College Sta. Rosa, N.E., Inc. Many things had already unfolded. Every
day, I learn new things, and I can get to know my learners little by little. I could
say that this internship of mine helped me to see different kinds of learners and
how they are different from one another.
Grade 10 – St. Dominic is considered the star section among all the other
sections in Grade 10. Most of the achievers can be found in this section.
However, there was a student who caught my attention. She is different from all
the other students in their section. She is usually alone and rarely attending their
classes. Therefore, I tried to think of a way on how am I going to make them
communicate with one another. Last January 22, 2024, I gave an activity in
Grade 10 – St. Dominic wherein they needed to read the testimonial speech I
prepared, as a group. I observed that she actively participated with her
groupmates, and she even got a good grade.

Furthermore, in Grade 10 – St. Ignatius they had their argumentative

speech last January 24 – 25, 2024. In that section, some students have stage
fright, which is why they are thinking if they are going to perform the speech that
they made. However, through their dedication and hard work, they made it
possible. I am beyond grateful that I was able to see how these students
overcome their fears and how they strive to reach their goals.
This week’s experiences made me realize that learners may vary from one
another. They have their learning styles, abilities, attitudes, and stories in life as
well. As teachers, it is our responsibility to know them well, so that we can adjust
our teaching techniques, approaches, and especially the types of assessment
that we could give to our learners. Nevertheless, we must also choose authentic
assessments and those that are suited to our learners’ needs, interests, and
abilities. Just like what Darwin D. Martin said that, “A teacher’s job is to take a
bunch of live wires and see that they are well-grounded.”
