CONTENT SUMMARY
This technical report presents the proof of concept (PoC) project of the CO2
reduction of the electric scooter as a mean for the green GrabBike service in Thu Dau
Mot City, Binh Duong Province at the request of BlueWing Motors Co., Ltd. (hereinafter
“BWM”). 10 electric scooters named Pega AuraS were purchased for testing.
Accordingly, 10 students selected by interview participated in driving electric motorcycles
as Grab drivers. GPS devices were attached to the vehicles to record the distance
travelled, which would be physically checked and assessed. The testing procedures and
testing equipments are agreed according to the contract No. 325/HD-TDMU between the
BWM and Thu Dau Mot university (hereinafter “TDMU”). The Institute of Engineering and
Technology, Thu Dau Moi University (hereinafter “IET-TDMU”) was the representative
unit for TDMU to directly perform this test. When the project was completed, all the data
collected could be assessed collectively so that the amount of CO 2 reduction of the
electric scooter by comparing it with the assumed comparative example of motorcycles
powered by gasoline engines can be evaluated.

The PoC project was conducted between September 18, 2022 and November 04,
2022. This technical report is presented with the following main contents:

1. Measurement of the traveled distance of the Pega Aura S electric scooter for one full
charging condition.

2. Measurement of the daily traveled distance collected from the GPS devices of the 10
electric scooter Pega AuraS.

3. Estimation of the amount of CO2 reduction of the electric scooter by comparing it with
the assumed comparative example of motorcycles powered by gasoline engines

Noted: The experimental results in this technical report are true only for the
investigated cases with the defined test objects and the test conditions which have
been carried out in the PoC project.

1. Objective of the PoC project

The goal of the Proof of Concept (PoC) project is to estimate the amount of CO2
reduction of the electric scooter as a mean for the green GrabBike service in Thu Dau
Mot City, Binh Duong Province. The main contents can be as follows:
 Measuring the traveled distance of the Pega AuraS electric scooter for one full
charging condition.
 Measuring the daily traveled distance collected from the GPS devices of the 10
electric scooter Pega AuraS.
 Estimating the amount of CO2 reduction of the electric scooter by comparing it
with the assumed comparative example of motorcycles powered by gasoline
engines.

2. Implementation process

2.1. Experimental object

2.1.1. Tested electric scooter

Figures 1 & 2 show an image of the tested electric scooter used in the PoC project
named PEGA AuraS and the vehicle specifications, respectively. As provided by the
manufacturer [1], the distance traveled per charging under standard condition is 100
km with the type of the accumulator of 60V-20Ah.

2.1.2. GPS devices

The global positioning system (GPS) tracker named PT08 with real time function
vehicle tracking device was used in this PoC project to measure the daily traveled
distance. Figure 3 illustrates the image of GPS tracker PT08 attached in the tested
electric scooter, while its specifications are listed in Table 1 [2].

2.1.3. Selection of the PoC paticipants
TDMU students who have worked or been willing to work as Grab drivers with a
maximum travel distance not exceeding 40 km a day were directly interviewed by the
BWM Co. Ltd. to select 10 candidates to participate in the project implementation. All
participants traveled using the PEGA AuraS electric scooter and registered as Grab
drivers [4] as shown in Figure 5.

Figure 5: 10 students participated in the PoC project registered as Grab drivers

Figure 6 shows the Grab services for motorcycle including: Grab Bike, Grab Food,
Grab Delivery, and Grab Mart. It can be seen in Figure 7 that most of the students
chose Grab Food service in this PoC project for their registration. Unlike Grab Bike or
Grab Express (i.e. customers are scattered everywhere), Grab Food customers often
gather in famous food or drink areas, where many restaurants are located in the city

Page 4
center. Therefore, this kind of Grab service was selected by most of student since the
TDMU location is in city center where many famous restaurants locate near by. Beside,
the peak-off time of TDMU student class schedule is very suitable with the peak time
of Grab Food ordering, so this is the main reason to explain the selection of 10
participants in the PoC project.

There was no requirement for when to travel, meaning participants could decide
when they start and stop travelling if they fulfill the daily distance required. All participants
were required to weekly submit their travel data to a person assigned to the data collection
job. Data were collected manually, meaning participants should visit the person collecting
data in a regular manner on specific days. The person in charge of data collection
examined and checked the data validity to ensure the participants only provided data
correctly. Project schedule would be from September 18th, 2022 to November 04th, 2022
(07 weeks). When the project was completed, all the data collected could be assessed
collectively so that the amount of CO2 reduction of the electric scooter by comparing it
with the assumed comparative example of motorcycles powered by gasoline engines can
be evaluated. Summary of the main obtained results of the PoC project can be as follows:

 Measurement of the traveled distance of the Pega AuraS electric scooter for one
full charging condition.
 Measurement of the daily traveled distance collected from the GPS devices of the
10 electric scooter Pega AuraS.
 Estimation of the amount of CO2 reduction of the electric scooter by comparing it
with the assumed comparative example of motorcycles powered by gasoline
engines.

The entire testing process above is illustrated in detail in Figure 8.

3.1. Traveled distance for one full charging condition

Figure 9 shows the testing route for measuring the traveled distance of the
Pega AuraS electric scooter for one full charging condition. The starting and
destination points were at district Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh city and the TDMU location,
Binh Duong province, respectively and vice versa. The PEGA AuraS has a total of
03 driving modes including “I”, “II”, and “III” (shown in Figure 10) which could be
selected based on the desired maximum vehicle speed and the response sensitivity
of traction force of the hub electric motor. The driving mode of “I” limits the maximum
speed of the electric scooter below 25 km/h while the driver’s controllability of the
traction force of the electric scooter can be easily adjusted. This mode is commonly
used in city road conditions where traffic jams often occur during rush hour. The
maximum speed of the electric scooter can be increased up to 30 and 40 km/h,
respectively with the selection of the “II” and “III” driving modes. It can be inferred
that the driving mode of “III” can be used in city road conditions where the traffic is
clear.

To perform the measurement of the traveled distance, the accumulator of the

PEGA AuraS electric scooter was fully charged. The driving mode of “III” was
selected to simulate conditions for the delivery of Grab Food in Thu Dau Mot city with
an average speed of the tested electric scooter varying from 30 to 40 km/h. Table 3
shows the experimental results of the traveled distance of the PEGA AuraS, while
Figure 11 compares the results of the traveled distance per charge announced by
the manufacturer under the standard conditions with the experimental results when
selecting the “III” driving mode. It can be seen that the average mileage is much
Page 8
lower than that of the manufacturer's announcement. The lower mileage of the
experimental results could be explained due to the continuous use of high speed
range of the driving mode “III” (i.e. lower electric motor efficiency region); thus leading
to the decrease in traveled distance of the tested electric scooter. Consequently, the
R&D activities for the PEGA AuraS controller are necessarily conducted to improve
the traveled distance per charge of the tested electric scooter.

3.2. Daily traveled distance collected from the GPS device

Figure 12 – 18 shows the comparison of the traveled distance per week of the
10 tested PEGA AuraS electric scooters from the 1st week to the 7th week of the PoC
project, respectively. From the obtained results, it can be seen that the maximum
traveled distance per week was 405.13 km (shown in Figure 13) while the minimum
traveled distance was 13.14 km (shown in Figure 14).
Figure 19 further shows the comparison of the average traveled distance per
week of the 10 tested PEGA AuraS electric scooters from the 1st week to the 7th week
of the PoC project with the range of traveled distance from 145.8 to 246.7 km. The
average traveled distance per day was then calculated and shown in Figure 20. It can
be said that the range of average traveled distance per day of the 10 tested PEGA
AuraS electric scooters varied from 23.7 to 35.2 km/day. As per discussion in the
section 3.1, the maximum traveled distance per charge was 45.2 km; therefore, it might
perhaps be concluded that the selection of PEGA AuraS electric scooter for the PoC
project is appropriate for the students who work as grab drivers.
Finally, the traveled distance of the 10 tested PEGA AuraS electric scooters
during the PoC project are compared in Figure 21. The maximum traveled distance
during the PoC project was 2204 km, while the minimum value was 916 km. Since
the participants are students, the total traveled distance may depend on their class
schedule every week and the receiving orders provided by Grab applications. The
further results of the PoC project in detail can be seen in the Appendix of this technical

report.

3.3. Estimation of the CO2 reduction of the electric scooter

Table 4 shows the assumptions for the comparative study, while Figure 22
Page 15
shows the estimating the amount of CO2 reduction of the tested electric scooter by
comparing it with the assumed comparative example of motorcycles powered by
gasoline engines. From the obtained results, it can be seen that the CO2 reduction
of the tested electric scooter with the 03 cases of maximum, average and minimum
traveled distance in the PoC project are 1.816; 01.11; and 0.755 ton of CO2e/year,
respectively. Additionally, 1 ton of CO2 saving per year is purchased with 35~40 USD
in Korea and Japan, and 85 USD in Europe; this could make electric motorcycles
become a very appealing solution that guarantees environmental sustainability and
opens up market opportunities for firms.

CONCLUSIONS

The main conclusion can be withdrawn from this PoC project as follows:
 In this PoC project, the average traveled distance per charge of the tested
PEGA AuraS electric scooter was 45.2 km and much lower than that of the
manufacturer's announcement. This lower mileage could be explained due to
the continuous use of high speed range of the driving mode “III”; thus leading
to the decrease in traveled distance of the tested electric scooter.
Consequently, the R&D activities for the PEGA AuraS controller are
necessarily conducted to improve the traveled distance per charge of the
tested electric scooter.
 The average traveled distance per week of the 10 tested PEGA AuraS electric
scooters from the 1st week to the 7th week of the PoC project varied from 145.8
to 246.7 km; while the calculated average traveled distance per day was from
23.7 to 35.2 km/day. Hence, it might perhaps be concluded that the selection
of PEGA AuraS electric scooter for the PoC project is appropriate for the
students who work as grab drivers.
 The CO2 reduction of the tested electric scooter with the 03 cases of maximum,
average and minimum traveled distance in the PoC project are 1.816; 01.11;
and 0.755 ton of CO2e/year, respectively.

The strong will of the Vietnamese government to achieve carbon neutrality was
confirmed by the official announcement made on 25 July, 2022 under document
number of 888/QD-TTg, which poses urgency to the market. To that end, the PoC
project may initially provide solutions to acquire carbon rights and financial benefits by
establishing a green mobility ecosystem.
