- He was a head coach of the American running team.
- He was one of the most important person of Nike
- His contribution to Blue Ribbon and Nike is so big that Phil
Knight once said: “Without Bowerman, there is no Nike”
- When he was still a coach at Oregon, he stole his athletes’ shoes
to experiment with which actually effective

- Johnson: He was one of the first employee of Blue Ribbon. A very
active man that he used to send many letters in a day to Phil that
he was tired of responsing. He was also an important part of Nike
- Strasser: He helped Phil Knight and Blue Ribbon with Onitsuka’s
lawsuit. After that, he worked for Nike for years before
“betraying” Nike. He had a heart attack and died in 1993
- Hayes: He was the member of the board of directors.
- Onitsuka: Onitsuka was the first company which Blue Ribbon
first cooperated with. The Tiger shoes accompanied with Blue
Ribbon for years and it was very successful before Onitsuka tried
to find another cooperator as a replacement for Blue Ribbon.
- Nissho: Nissho is a company which funding for Nike. After
having a feeling about the treachery of Onitsuka, Nike
collaborated with Nissho and their collaboration is the origin of
success. While Nike was collaborating with Nissho, they helped
Nike to pay off debt and end Nike’s collaboration with Calfornia
bank.
Nike’s history
- 1964: Blue Ribbon was founded on January 25, 1964 by Phil
Knight and his coach, Bill Bowerman. Phil Knight collaborated
with Onitsuka. Onitsuka would produce Tiger shoes and Blue
Ribbon would sell it at America. The first year was good with
the first employee was Jeanne – Phil’s sister. In the first year,
Blue Ribbon earned $8000
- 1965: Phil hired Jeff Johnson as the first full-time employee.
Phil first knew and realized the importance of equity when
working with Oregon bank. Phil worked at Price Waterhouse
and first met Delbert J. Hayes who would be a very important
member of Nike. In 1965, Blue Ribbon earned total $20000
