• The Ministry of Small-Scale Industries is the administrative Ministry in the Government of India for all matters relating to small-scale and village industries. • It designs and implements policies and programmes through its field organizations and attached offices for promotion and growth of small industries. • The Department of Small-Scale Industries and Agro and Rural Industries was created in 1991, in the Ministry of Industry to exclusively formulate the policy framework for promoting and developing small-scale industries in the country. • The Department initiates appropriate policy measures, programmes, and schemes for the promotion of SSIs. • The policy measures include the setting up of a network of institutions to render assistance and to provide a comprehensive range of services and common facilities or SSls. The range of services cover consultancy in techno-economic and managerial aspects, training, testing facilities and marketing assistance through the agencies created for the specified functions. • These activities are supported by a host of other Centra and State government departments, promotional agencies. Autonomous institutions, non-government organisations. • The department monitors the progress and evaluates performanceof the sector at the Central level. The Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is Nitin Gadkari and the Minister of State is Pratap Chandra Sarangi since 31 May 2019. • Under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the Government of India established The National Board for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NBMSME) to examine the factors affecting promotion and development of MSME. This board also reviews the existing policies and suggests recommendations to the Government for the growth of the MSME sector • The services provided by the Ministry of MSME are as follows: • Facilities for testing, training for entrepreneurship development • Preparation of project and product profiles • Technical and managerial consultancy • Assistance for exports • Pollution and energy audits. • Importance and Features of MSME’s • The MSME sector is considered the backbone of the Indian economy that has contributed substantially to the economic development of the nation. It generates employment opportunities and works in the development of backward and rural areas. Hence, they are of paramount importance for overall economic development of India. KVIC • The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is a statutory body formed in April 1957 by the Government of India, under the Act of Parliament, 'Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956’. • It is an apex organisation under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, with regard to khadi and village industries within India, which seeks to - "plan, promote, facilitate, organise and assist in the establishment and development of khadi and village industries in the rural areas in coordination with other agencies engaged in rural development wherever necessary." • In April 1957, it took over the work of former All India Khadi and Village Industries Board. Its head office is in Mumbai, whereas its six zonal offices in Delhi, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai and Guwahati. Other than its zonal offices, it has offices in 28 states for the implementation of its various programmes The Coir Board • The Coir Board is a statutory body established by the Government of India under the Coir Industry Act 1953 (No. 45 of 1953) for the promotion and development of the coir (coconut fibre) industry in India. • It is based in Kochi and Alappuzha. The head office of the Coir Board is in Kochi and the research and training office is at Alappuzha and Bangalore. The coir industry is one of India's traditional industries that is still economically important. • The Coir Board has regional offices in different parts of India, wherever there is a significant industry presence. The board works for the promotion, research, education, and training of the industry. The board functions under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. • The coir industry employs more than 7 lakh (700,000) people, a majority of whom are from rural areas who belong to economically weaker sections of society. • The Coir Board has worked actively to support the International Year of Natural Fibres 2009. • Shri Sudhir Garg is the current chairman of Coir Board of India. • National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC) is a Mini Ratna government agency established by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises , Government of India in 1955. It falls under Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises of India. NSIC is the nodal office for several schemes of Ministry of MSME such as Performance & Credit Rating, Single Point Registration, MSME Databank, National SC ST Hub, etc.
