LEVI CELERIO:
Filipino musician and lyricist Levi Celerio born on April 30, 1910 in Tondo Manila
and died on April 2, 2002 is primarily recognized for his contributions to Filipino
music. He studied at the Academy of music under a scholarship and later went on
to join the Manila Symphony Orchestra. He is also a Violinist and throughout his
career, he composed over 4,000 songs, many of which went on to become hit
songs both domestically and abroad and many of which are dedicated to his wife
and children. He wrote Filipino folk, Christmas, and love songs and some of his
songs were used in feature films. He was a very diverse musician and was named
National Artist for music and literature.
In addition to being a well-known songwriter, Celerio was also known for his
extraordinary ability to perform music using leaves. By passing air through a leaf
and transforming it into a makeshift wind instrument so that he could create
melodies. Because of this ability, he is the only leaf player in the world and is listed
in the Guinness World Records.
Levi Celerio made a lasting addition to Philippine music, and his songs are still
loved by fans of the genre today. Some of his well-known works are "Dahil Sa Iyo,"
"Sa Ugoy ng Duyan," "Ang Pasko ay Sumapit," and "Pasko na naman." Throughout
his life, Levi Celerio was recognized with many praise for his contributions to
culture and musical excellence.
Now let us listen to Levi Celerio’s song that I think is loved by us all because it
gives us the Christmas presence and the song never gets old, kasi we hear it
naman every year.
National Artist for Music Levi Celerio landed a spot in the Guinness Book of
World Records for being the first man who could play music on a leaf.
