Deckard’s neighbor serves as a big plot
point to understand the significance of
animals in the dystopian Earth.
Not only as horses (majestic and a
representation of wealth), but also as big
animals in themselves. The bigger the
animal, a real one, the more impressive
you are socially. Rick is clearly jealous of
his neighbor’s horse; in page 9 he thinks
“He wished to god he had a horse… from a
social standpoint, it had to be done.”
Horses are symbols in culture as
animals that are strong, fast, and
steady. In Chinese mythology, horses
represent power and luxury; good
things to come economically for the
person who owns one.
In certain mythologies, horses also
represent human greed, and
sociopolitical domination. Deckard is
greedy; when offered a mouse, a cat or
a cricket he says: “I don’t want a
domestic pet. I want what I originally
had, a large animal.” (13)
