Answer the following questions using what you've learned from this unit. Write your
responses in the space provided.

For questions 1 - 5, identify the conic section from its equation. (4 points each)

1.
The center of this ellipse is at the point (h, k), which, from the equation, is (5, -3).

2.

The hyperbola centered at (4, 2) with vertices 6 units away from the center
3.

The conic section represented by the given equation is a circle with center (-3, 8)
and radius 5.

4.

The conic section is a parabola.

5.
The conic section is a parabola.

For question 6, answer the questions about the conic section. (5 points)

6.
Center: (4,2)

Vertices: (10,2),(-2,2)

Foci:
Eccentricity: √5/2

Asymptotes: y=x/2, y=-x/2+4

Length of transverse axis: 12

Length of conjugate axis: 6

For questions 7 - 9, graph each conic section. (5 points each)

7.
Center: (5,-3)

Vertices: 1:(5,1) 2:(5,-7)

Foci: 1: (5, -3+2√3) 2: (5, -3-2√3)

Eccentricity: √3/2

Length of major axis: 8

Length of minor axis: 4

8.
Center: (-3,8)

Radius: 5

9.
Vertex: (2,-3)

Focus: (5/2, -3)

Directrix: x = 3/2

Length of focal chord: 2

For questions 10 - 11, solve each system. In your work, identify the shape of the
graph of each equation. (5 points each)

10.

7y^2 + x^2 = 64

x^2/a^2+y^2/b^2 = 1

a^2 = 64

b^2 = 64/7

X+y=4
Y=4-x

7(4-x)^2+x^2=64

7(16-8x+x^2)+x^2=64

112-56x+7x^2+x^2=64

8x^2-56x+112-64=0

8x^2-56x+48=0

x^2-7x+6=0

(x-6)(x-1)=0
X = 6 or x = 1

If x = 6:

Y=4-6

Y = -2

If x = 1:

Y=4-1

Y=3

(x,y) = (6, -2) and (x,y) = (1, 3)

It is an ellipse

11.

x^2 + y^2 + 2x + 2y = 0

x^2 + 2x + 1^2 = -(y^2 + 2y)

y^2 + 2y + 1^2 = -(x^2 + 2x + 1) + 1

x^2 + 2x + 1 + y^2 + 2y + 1 = 1

(x + 1)^2 + (y + 1)^2 = 1^2

This is the equation of a circle centered at (-1, -1) with a radius of 1.

x^2 + y^2 + 2x + 6y + 9 =0

y^2 + 6y + 3^2 = -(x^2 + 2x + 1) + 9 - 9

x^2 + 2x + 1 + y^2 + 6y + 9 = 9

(x + 1)^2 + (y + 3)^2 = 3^2

This is the equation of a circle centered at (-1, -3) with a radius of 3.
