REVIEWER ( PRECAL QUIZ #1 – CIRCLE )

A. FINDING THE EQUATION OF A CIRCLE

1. Find the equation of a circle given its diameter with
endpoints ( 3, 6) and (-1, 4 )
a. Solve for the midpoint of the diameter which is the
center of the circle
Midpoint Formula = ( x +2 x ) ( y +2 y )
1 2 1 2

=( 2 )( 2 )
3+(−1) 6+ 4

= ( 2 ) ( 2 ) = ( 1, 5 ) → center
2 10

b. Solve for the distance between the two endpoints to get

the diameter then divide it by 2 to get the radius
Distance Formula = √(x – x ) +( y – y )
2 1
2
2 1
2

= √((−1 ) −3) +(4 – 6) 2 2

= √(−4) +(−2) 2 2

= √ 16+ 4
= √ 20 = √ 4.5 = 2√ 5 diamete
2√ 5
radius = 2 = √5
c. Since center is at ( 1, 5 ) and r =√ 5 , the required equation then is
( x – h ) 2 + ( y – k )2 = r 2
( x – 1 )2 + ( y – 5 )2 = ( √ 5 )2
( x – 1 )2 + ( y – 5 )2 = 5 answer
2. Find the equation of the circle with center at ( 5, 10 ) and passing
through the point ( 3, 9 )
Solution:
2 2 2
(x–h) +(y–k) =r
2 2 2
( x – 5 ) + ( y – 10 ) = r
2 2 2
( 3 – 5 ) + ( 9 – 10 ) = r
2 2 2
( -2 ) + ( -1 ) = r
2
4 + 1=r
2
5=r
2
( x – h )2 + ( y – k ) 2 = r
2 2
( x – 5 ) + ( y – 10 ) = 5 answer
3. Find the equation of a circle with center at ( 7, 3 ) and tangent to the
y-axis.
2 2 2
Solution: (x–h) +(y–k) =r
2 2 2
(x–7) +(y–3) =(7)
2 2
( x – 7 ) + ( y – 3 ) = 49 answer
B. FINDING THE CENTER AND THE RADIUS OF CIRCLE
1. Find the center and the radius
( x + 5 )2 + ( y – 9 )2 = 64
Solution:
Center = ( h, k ) = ( -5, 9 ) answer
r2 = 64
r = √ 64 = 8 answer
2. Find the center and the radius
x2 + 4x + y2 – 2y – 11 = 0
x2 + 4x + y2 – 2y = 11
( x2 + 4x ) + ( y2 – 2y ) = 11
4 2
2 = (2)2= 4 2 = (1 )2 = 1
( x2 + 4x + 4) + ( y2 – 2y + 1) = 11 +4 + 1
( x + 2 )( x + 2 ) + ( y – 1 )( y – 1 ) = 16
( x + 2 ) 2 + ( y – 1 )2 = 16
Center = ( h, k ) = ( -2, 1 ) answer
r = √ 16 = 4 answer
3. Find the center and the radius
x2 + y2 = 100
center m= ( 0, 0 ) answer
r = √ 100 = 10 answer
