OBJECTIVES

1. Determines the center and radius of a circle

given its equation.
2. Write the equation of a circle in standard form
given its center and its radius.
3. Appreciate the use of equation of a circle in
finding solutions to real-life problems and decision
making.

EQUATION OF A CIRCLE AT ORIGIN

2 2 2
x +y =r
Example 1: Find the center and radius of
the circle 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 25.
2 2

Solution: The given equation is in the

form 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑟 .
2 2 2
*This means that the center of the circle is at the
origin.
*To find the radius, get the square root of 25,
which is 5.
Note: Since 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 25
2 2

is in the form 𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑟 ,
2 2 2
then 𝑟 = 25.
2

By extracting the square

roots, 𝑟 = 𝟓.
Therefore, the center of the circle is at (𝟎, 𝟎) and
the radius is 5 units.
EQUATION OF A CIRCLE AT (h,k)
( x-h) + ( y-k) =r
2 2 2

Example 2: Find the center and radius of the circle

(𝑥 - 6) + (𝑦 − 4) = 16.
2 2
Solution: The given equation is in the form (𝑥 −
ℎ) + (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 𝑟
2 2 2

This means that the center of the circle

is at (ℎ, 𝑘).
(𝑥 – 6) + (𝑦 − 4) = 16 Given.
2 2

(𝑥 - 6) + (𝑦 − 4) = 4
2 2 2
Write as (𝑥 − ℎ) + (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 𝑟 .
2 2 2

𝑟 = 16. By extracting the square roots, 𝑟 = 4 ℎ =

2

6, 𝑘 = 4, 𝑟=4
Therefore, the center of the circle is at (6, 𝟒) and the
radius is 4 units.

WRITE THE EQUATION OF A CIRCLE

Example 1: Write the equation of a circle which is
the center is at (𝟎, 𝟎) and the radius is 8 units.
Solution: Use the equation in the form 𝑥2

+ 𝑦 = 𝑟 because the center is at the

2 2

origin.
Then, 𝑥 +𝑦 =8.
2 2 2

To find the radius, get the square of 8 that is

64.
Therefore, the equation of a circle which is the
center is at (𝟎, 𝟎) and the radius is 8 units is 𝑥 +
2

𝑦 = 64
2
Example 2: Write the equation of a circle with a
center of (2, -1) and a radius of 6
Solution: Use the equation is in the form (𝑥 − ℎ) 2

+ (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 𝑟 because the center of the

2 2

circle is at (ℎ, 𝑘).

(𝑥 − ℎ) + (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 𝑟
2 2 2

(𝑥 – 2) + (𝑦 – (-1)) = 6 Given.
2 2 2

(𝑥 - 2) + (𝑦 + 1) = 36
2 2
Write as (𝑥 − ℎ) + (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 𝑟 . 2 2 2

Therefore, the equation of a circle with a center of

(2, -1) and a radius of 6 is (𝑥 - 2) + (𝑦 + 1) = 36

Circles are great for GPS calculating. By using the distance
your phone is from one tower they can use several towers,
use the intersecting circle created by the distance to find out
exactly where you might be... The more towers the more
accurate.
