Showing interest
• When we have a conversation, it is polite to show interest in what other people is saying.
• It is also polite to ask a follow-up question to find out more information.
• For someone learning a new language, knowing how to respond to something a person says can be
confusing. There are many possible ways to respond with interest:
A: I don’t like this TV show.
B: Oh? Why not?
A: The movie was just awful!
B: Oh, that’s too bad. Why didn’t you like it?

To maintain conversation and lead to interesting discussions.
• Useful tips:
▪ Try to find something common with your listener.
▪ Try to match the mood of the speakers. Don’t try to be light-hearted if they seem serious.
▪ Don’t answer in one-word sentences. Try to give more information or say. something interesting.
▪ Remember to ask questions. Don’t just talk about yourself.

• Remember that how loud you need to speak will depend on where the presentation, event, or meeting is
being held.

Exercise 6: Give a short presentation about something that makes you feel good, such as a
celebration, a holiday, or an activity you like to do in your free time.
Stage 1: Brainstorming
Write some ideas for your presentation topic in your notebooks.
Stage 2: Organizing ideas
Choose one of your ideas from step 1. In your notebook, write short notes to help you plan your presentation.

Stage 3: Presenting
1. Decide who will present first, second and so on.
2. While one person presents, the audience listen carefully.
3. After the presenter finishes, each person in the audience must ask one question – either a yes/no question
or a wh-question.
