LEARNING COMPETENCIES
1. Solve problems using the Chain Rule; and

2. Illustrate implicit differentiation.

Now, suppose we want to find the
derivative of a power function of x. That
is, we are interested in 𝐷𝑥 𝑓 𝑥 𝑛 .
To derive a formula for this, we let y = u^n
where u is a differentiable function of x
given by u = f(x). Then by the Chain Rule,

Not all functions can be defined explicitly by an
equation. For example, we cannot write the
equation
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝒙 = 𝟐𝒚𝟑 + 𝒚𝟐 − 𝟓𝒚

For y in terms of x. One or more functions f may

exist. If y=f(x), then
𝟑 𝟐
𝒙𝟒 − 𝟐𝒙 = 𝟐 𝒇 𝒙 + 𝒇 𝒙 − 𝟓𝒇(𝒙)

holds for all values of x in the domain of f.
In this case the function f is defined
implicitly by the given equation.
With the assumption that y is a
differentiable function of x, we can still
differentiate y with respect to x. This
time we call this process implicit
differentiation.
