Lesson Focus: Drops, Clears, Smashes; & Introduction to Doubles

Lesson Objectives (SWBAT):


1. Perform drops, clears, and smashes.
2. Understand the rules and fundamentals of doubles gameplay.
3. Demonstrate understanding of badminton skills and rules through gameplay.

10-25 Students set-up nets, grab rackets, and rally.


Introduction

25-30 Dynamic warm-up. Lunges


- One lap around both sets of stairs - Knee & Foot Same Direction
- Shoulder circles - Land with Bent Knee
- Grab Rackets - Lunges: 2x5/5/5 (Side, Diagonal, Front) per leg. - Chest Upright

30-35 Take attendance.


Review concepts from yesterday: serving, ready position, scoring.
35-45 Teach clear shots – forehand & backhand, underhand & overhand. Clear Shots
Practice clear shots – alternating FH & BH in halfcourt singles. - Hit the birdie high and deep

- Long serve – overhand clear


- Short serve – underhand clear

45-55 Teach drop shots – forehand & backhand, underhand & overhand. Drop Shots
Practice drop shots – alternating FH & BH in halfcourt singles. - Swing same as clear or smash to disguise
- Don’t flick the wrist too hard
- Long serve – overhand drops - Try not to sell the shot
- Short serve – underhand drop

Putting it all together – Drop, drop, clear.

55-65 Teach smashes – forehand & backhand. Smashes


Practice net smashes – alternating FH & BH in halfcourt singles. - Wide stance, Non-racket leg forward
- Bring racket arm back and non-racket arm
- High Serve – Smash – UH Clear - Smash points towards birdie
- Contact birdie at its highest point
- Follow through with downwards motion
B 65-70 Teach introduction to doubles – serving, scoring, and review boundaries Doubles Rules

70-85 Doubles gameplay – competitive and recreational tournaments.


Explain to the students that choosing competitive or recreational has no
impact on their grades. Instead, it is meant so that they can have more
fun competing against classmates of similar ability levels.
Count up competitive and recreational numbers and divide up the 8
badminton courts accordingly. As students play their first matches,
draw up the round robins on the whiteboards on the respective sides of
the gym.
Students play each other and then challenge other teams that they
haven’t played yet.

85-90 Students put rackets back and leave to get changed.
