NF 2 - Place a Fraction
on a Number Line
Fractions
Number Line & Visual Models
Number Puzzles
This number line shows students where fractions occur on a number line relative to 0, 1/2 and 1. It is not an exact
placement, but an approximation, closer to the benchmark number. Each number line should be viewed as separate
from the other number lines. Students are not comparing fractions but comparing each fraction to 0, 1/2 or 1..

There are 8 versions of the number lines. 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 1/3, 2/3 and their equivalents are easier to place on the
number lines.

If your students are up for a challenge, the 6ths and 8ths without equivalent fractions can be approximately placed
on the given number lines. They are the same bump marks as the above. The intent is not to compare fractions on
an number line, but to place factions on a number line.

Each page will need to be printed 2, 3, 4, or 5 times, for the given pieces on a page that are available to fit that
bump placement.

To assemble:
Print on colored paper, laminate and cut apart. There are directions on each number line page with the quantity
to print for each of the pieces. © Jessica Boschen • What I Have Learned

Objective:
Place a fraction on a number line using benchmark numbers.

Student Directions:
1. Look at the number line.
2. Determine whether the fraction is closer to 0, 1/2 or 1.
3. Place it on the appropriate number line.

Objective:
Place a fraction on a number line using benchmark numbers and other fractions. See
equivalent fractions.

Student Directions:
1. Look at the number line.
2. Determine whether the fraction is closer to 0, 1/2 or 1 or
equivalent to another fraction.
3. Place it on the number line in the appropriate place.

Number Puzzles
Note: For these puzzles, there are both circle and square representations of
the same fraction amount. Tell students that they have to match equivalent
fractions with different denominators or number of parts. Printing the pages
on a variety of colored paper will help differentiate the puzzles.

There are many variations to these puzzles. I tried to include all possible
variations for each equivalent fraction relationship, except the fractions of one
whole. You may not need to print all the puzzles to make a complete station.

Equivalent Fractions
Number Line & Visual Models
Number Puzzles
Objective:
Match equivalent fractions in number form and visual form.

Student Directions:
1. Match four pieces that are equivalent: one circle, one
rectangle, and two fraction numbers.
2. Draw and write the puzzle on the recording sheet.

Number Puzzles
Note: For the next two sets of puzzles, there is one way to match all the cards as noted on
the puzzles. When cut apart, there will be multiple ways to sort the cards and likely pieces
left over, if the cards are not matched exactly as they are printed. One way to help with
this is to print the pages on a variety of colored paper.

Alternatively, if a majority of puzzles are matched correctly, accept them as correct and the
left over pieces as just extra pieces.

You could also challenge students to rearrange the puzzles so that all pieces have matches.

The number and visual models are exactly the same puzzles. Either use the puzzles
separately, or print them on the same colored paper and intermix the pieces.

Student Directions:
1. Match three pieces to make the statement true.
2. Write the expression on the recording sheet.
