Multiplying with and without regrouping

On a Thursday night, Riley’s mother made 3 boxes of

doughnuts for snacks. If each box has 12 doughnuts,
how many doughnuts did Riley’s mother make?

Multiplying without regrouping

1. Start at the ones place.
12
X 3

2. Move on the tens places.

The following Monday, Riley’s mom made 6 boxes of
doughnuts that they can share with their friends. If each
box still has 12 doughnuts each, how many did his mom
make this time?

1. Start at the ones place

2. Move on to the tens places.

1x6=6
Then add 1.
6+1=7

On Monday, Riley’s mom made 72 doughnuts.

If the multiplier has 2 digits, here is how we compute.
Example A:
12
x 12
Step 1:

Multiply using the first multiplier.

Step 2:

Multiply using the second multiplier but place the first

answer in the tens place.
Step 3:

Put zero in the ones place of the second multiplier’s

answer or simply bring down the number in the ones
place then find the sum.
